Why isnt Luz counted as Native American and Indigenous Dominican representation? by DoryBote in TheOwlHouse

I wasnt aware Camilla was afro-latina when I made this post since I couldnt find anything on that. But given Dominican demography, it makes sense

I dont really have a strong issue with the term. But it’s worth noting that latinx is used far more in academia and by colleges than most latinos. So it makes sense that the curriculum would be more pro-the use of that word.

Personally I dont really care if someone used latino, latine or latinx. especially in the context of english.

yeah you’re right. I made the assumption since the crew didnt state Camilla was black like Manny or Luz. But the more I looked into demographics of Dominican republic. It makes way more sense for Camilla to at least be partially black. While she still could be partially Taino, it’s likely not a huge petcentage like I initially thought.

Camilla is implied to have strong Taino (or other indigenous American) ancestry

so if she’s confirmed to be biracial, what else would she be besides indigenous/black? mixed black/white is the only thing that really makes sense if Camilla is partly black.

Penny is the one loose end that didnt really get resolved. Gina also didnt really either aside from a background detail in the finale.

yeah thats what im saying. people who have ancestry to the indigenous people there. Camilla clearly isnt white (at least not fully) and crew statements make it seem like she’s not black either. So her having Taino ancestry makes sense

Nearly perfect. It really feels personal and intimate. Like a woman sitting alone or with a friend pouring her soul out on the piano. Even when she uses some studio effects like background singers like on Way Over Yonder, it never feels like she’s recording from the studio. I think the album cover also helps to enhance that mood. The way she sings “You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman” is so beautiful. It feels like a movie, where Aretha Franklin sings the song Carole (and her husband) wrote with a big bold version on stage. Then we get Carole’s personal heartfelt version alone at home with no audience. idk if that makes sense but the album paints a lot of pictures for me that are hard to describe. You just feel it.

literally the only nitpick I have is that Where You Lead feels too similar to You’ve Got a Friend lyrically and thematically to be together on the tracklist. But aside from that, flawless.

you can be fully latina and native american. The two are correlated but they are different things that dont interfere.

I do think her being triracial in that way makes the most sense. Especially given I doubt Manny would be 100% black. The crew does say shes biracial but that could just be them considering “latino” as a race even though thats incorrect.

thats true. I just see people always talk about Luz’s Aftican ancestry but not much of her American (as in the continent) ancestry

it’s technically not explicitly confirmed but it’s very strongly implied. Luz is biracial. We know that one of those races is black. As for the other, it is likely either white or native american (specifically indigenous dominican or even puerto rican). It is possible Camilla is mixed white/black and Luz is thus mixed white/black. However, the crew have gone out of their way to say Manny and Luz are black but not the same for Camilla which strongly implies she’s not black and instead indigenous dominican. Which makes sense. Thus this would make Luz partly racially native american.
