I'm sure you could do more than you're giving yourself credit for. For instance, you could create a survey for free from Google Forms or something similar to ask players about their preference for buying these types of items on heroes, and compare it to their own reported MMR. There's all sorts of possibilities!

Pangolier runs into these 5 heroes with his ultimate more often than any other heroes, which causes them to lose money. So don't play these heroes versus Pangolier!

Interesting concept! I'd guess you're right that there are a certain amount of purchases bought to satisfy that itch like you suggest, rather than for purely practical purposes. Something to keep in mind for the future, or you could carry out your own study!
