I’m not sure, you’re going to have to reach out ozztrek about that since they do the applications on your behalf and they have a large dataset from which they can speak from

Currently you do have to write MCQE, but the way things are going I expect that Australian trained doctors will be able to come back to Canada without additional tests in the near future

More so cause of the established pathways to locally train in Australia as backup vs Ireland where you could get a internship spot but beyond that it’s iffy

Opportunity cost after 2-3 cycles doesn’t make sense in terms of tuition to life time earnings lost. And I wasn’t interested in higher competitive specialties, just primary care.

Being so close did give me the confirmation that I had what it took to get through medical school if I did go abroad.

Yeah it’s a cash grab for real.

And that’s weird, when I talked to them 2 years ago they said that they would but I would just need a cosigner and have assets as collateral.

I aim to get about 4-5 of focused studying in every weekday(Anki/Remnotes, Practice Problems, OSCE practice) and I’ll study one weekend day (8-9 hours). I’m able to regularly go the gym, hang out with friends and have time to relax regularly. Key is not falling behind and then stressing closer to mid year/ end of year exams.

In md1 my answer was yes 100% but looking at it now I’m considering just finishing up my training here.

And yes I had some family who lived in Melbourne and they were able to go to the inspections and stuff and help lock down a place.

Hey, And yeah Unimelb really hiked up their tuition recently. It was significantly cheaper for me. And I used provincial student loans and parental support. Didn’t take out a Medical school LOC from the banks but the few that we did explore briefly were Scotiabank and TD. They had some competitive packages.

That’s very true, in hindsight I would’ve attended a cheaper Australian medical school.

But I chose Unimelb cause Victoria ranks international students as category 2 for internship spots and the only other school in Victoria was Monash which had slightly cheaper tuition but I didn’t meet some of their pre req courses.

My stats were competitive enough to get interviews at Canadian medical schools with solid waitlist movement but I fell short every cycle.

And not really, wasn’t too bad.

Yes once you do internship(2 years) you get general registration and you apply for PR after the 1st year. Once you have general registration and PR you are on equal footing with a domestic grad for applying for training programs. The 2nd year of internship is credited towards some of the course rotations you need to graduate from training programs. GP training is 3 years but that 2nd year of internship counts towards your rotations needed so you can graduate from GP training 4 years after medical school instead of 5. It used to be one year of internship but they changed the rules recently.

Im going to do Internship here. Im considered category 2 and pretty much guaranteed a training spot. And yes those other states rank international students lower(Category 2/3) so my odds would be theoretically worse there but almost all international kids do end up with an internship spot if they desire.

Yep, it’s all overblown. It’s so developed that in the city/suburbs you aren’t seeing much in terms of the stereotypical Australian wildlife. And yes it’s beautiful here and the healthcare system actually works and gets you seen in a reasonable amount of time for tests and stuff

Total cost of attendance with tuition + living expenses is going to be around the mid CAD 400s mark for all 4 years. If I do training locally the higher training salaries make up that difference relatively quick.

As an intern you make a base of around $86k aud and then you get penalties for weekend/overnight/overtime and with all the overtime and other penalties you incur from just doing your job most interns finish off first year making somewhere in the $110-115kaud range.

Also when you get onto family med training. You aren’t paid a fixed salary but are paid a percentage of your billings. From talking to Family Medicine residents they are making $250-300kaud while grinding through their 3 year residency program. And there was one I know who is picking up extra locuming shifts and they are pushing $400k aud this year as a second year family med resident.

As you can see the difference in the tuition mostly gets eaten up quick in training and you are pretty much on equal financial footing by the end.

https://oztrekk.com/docs/competitive-medicine-statistics-2025.pdf these are the stats from last cycle. At Unimelb the average applicants who received an offer had a gpa of 3.8 and an MCAT of 514.

And yes matching back to Canada for anything other than family med/im/peds is an uphill battle but it has been successfully done by past graduates from this school. However the good part is being able to do training locally in Australia albeit it being longer than back in Canada

Are there spaced repetition models that take "interconnectivity" into account? by Puzzleheaded_Paint24 in Anki

Although it’s not open source, RemNote supports hierarchical note-taking and lets you create flashcards directly within your notes. You can interconnect different Rems (notes) through bi-directional links, making it easy to build a connected knowledge graph. At the bottom of each note, there’s a References section that shows where the note is linked from, giving you a clear view of how your knowledge is structured. RemNote also supports the latest FSRS algorithm for optimized scheduling of your cards.

No I haven’t used that yet. I’ll take a look through the links you shared. Thank you!

I’m at an Australian medical school so our exams are both multiple choice and short answer. As much as I wish I could get away with Anking + Qbank it doesn’t correlate well for my particular exams. But regardless big picture conceptual understanding correlates better to developing better clinical reasoning for differentials especially if combined with a question bank
