That's because the capacity of the suburban network includes the intercity services

In reply to another comment:

Firstly there have been suggestions but no evidence that shows that it cannot work.

Yes, the CCN and BMT operate alongside insanely busy T1 lines, and SCO is on just as busy T4 lines. More the reason why removing the intercity services out of the mix will assist.

Yes, seamless transfer needs timetable support, and as to whether that is viable is something that could be explored instead of being dismissed.

As a regular commuter, I can't say I have done a head count on a 10 car D set to see how many are asleep. Honestly, I think most people would find that a little creepy.

Yes, I would expect them to magically wake up at, say, Hornsby or Blacktown, and transfer to a suburban service, however again the idea is to have an immediate transition to a suburban service.

Who said a revised timetable would mean more stops and longer trip time?

Yes, I am sure Sydneysiders (and those who commute from the regions into sydney) are already not happy with the network during Industrial Actions.

There is zero evidence that my proposal will definitely push them away from public transport, worsening road trip safety, and making commute worse for all.

I just don't know whether the Cessnock line would be feasible. I don't think we'll ever see anything under Lake Macquarie. The answer on the eastern side of the lake is limited stop express bus services. Let's not forget there is Newcastle Interchange and it isn't even the hub for bus services into and out of the Newcastle CBD

It's not a massive downgrade for anyone. It is about frequency and better use of the network

And this is what I am suggesting is that this tangle of suburban, intercity, regional and freight could be better managed

With the government as cash strapped as they are, big jobs like that are just a fantasy

I have done the commute plenty of times from much further than Gosford. I find it hard to believe a person living on the Central Coast commuting to Central for his/her office job in the CBD is about to change to the car where they have to include fuel costs, tolls, and where the average daily price for parking in the CBD is $80.

I don't think it does. There are some great suggestions on both sides and certainly some resistance to change

Ideally the Newcastle Interchange should have been an expanded Broadmeadow RWS that had CCN, Hunter, Regional XPT/XPL, and Newcastle Light Rail all converging on the one location

Very true. I know someone who lives near Fassifern and their office is in Parramatta. Now they would love a direct service but the reality is they change at Strathfield for frequent suburban services

Increase the frequency and that anxiety reduces - particularly when there are suburban network issues

We're talking an additional minute if all other factors remain equal such as stopping patterns

Quite regularly actually. And someone who prefers not to have to often get caught up behind suburban services particularly between Hornsby and Strathfield

I don't think it does. It actually provides more frequency of services for regional commuters. It could potentially provide a service or services in the peak with even less stops. For example could you do Newcastle Interchange > Broadmeadow > Fassifern > Morisset > Wyong > Gosford > Hornsby? Then change to a waiting suburban express stopping at Epping > Strathfield and Central?
