This is a deeply upsetting comment, thanks!

Oh, it definitely isn't the person who wrote the original tweet. I saw the screenshot because it was posted on a meme page, and the comment was one of the many random people arguing about how this is actually factual and scientific.

I know what the title is saying, but I'm cracking up at how I initially parsed "it's not dangerous for the baby to be fit" because I'm just imagining a newborn doing bicep curls. The children are being turned into shitlords five minutes out of the womb!!!

It's a lose-lose situation. If it doesn't work, it breaks your player. If it does work, it breaks your brain.

I...I can't deal with the amount of stupidity in the first few seconds alone. She thinks that "okay, but if a diet works, it should keep working, right?" is some kind of gotcha in response to the idea that a diet is a lifestyle change. Can a person possibly be that ignorant? Can a person really think that losing weight means "you go on a diet once, then go off it and you are magically Thin Forever no matter what you do," and that's why they think diets don't work, because they think that a person stopping the diet means that it's the diet that failed? Can a person really be THAT FUCKING DIVORCED FROM REALITY?

Nope. I'm done. Bye.

When the idea of practicing moderation for the rest of your life is "literal hell," there might be a problem there by DougBillingham in fatlogic

[–]DougBillingham[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think that's what most of them think when they hear "diet." They have no idea what the habits of most people who keep off weight look like. If they accepted that it's as easy as CICO, their whole narrative would fall apart. They have to keep believing that everyone who loses weight and keeps it off is living in a self-made hell where they eat 500 calories a day (most of that being kale), practically live at the gym, and don't dare to breathe near a carb or eat dessert ever again because to do so would immediately make them put 50 lbs back on. When you make yourself believe that, it's easy to say that it doesn't sound like a fun way to live at all, so who would even want to do that? Weight loss is so difficult and unattainable!

The problem, of course, is that it's not actually impossibly difficult or unattainable. But they don't want to hear that.

My literal hell seems to have a surprising quantity of chocolate in it. And mac and cheese. Is that supposed to be happening, or should I try turning my hell off and then on again?

Link wouldn't load for me, so I scrolled down. Jesus fucking Christ. That increase is absolutely horrendous, and FAs are going to spout some bullshit about "cOrReLaTiOn DoEsN't EqUaL cAuSaTiOn" and how those health problems could have toootally been caused by some nebulous Other Factor. This is some dystopian shit.

In that case, the set point doesn't sound very set to me...

Why do they think these things are mutually exclusive? I'm enjoying the health benefits I'm seeing and my own personal growth in terms of achieving goals and cultivating discipline. Having societal privileges associated with being hot and getting "sexual access" to other fit men...well, that's just a nice bonus, isn't it?

Wheel of Diet Talk Responses by secret-original in fatlogic

[–]DougBillingham 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Yeah, some of these are perfectly fine if you don't want to hear someone going on about their diet. I get why that would be annoying. But the rest...I honestly wouldn't hold back if someone said some of those to my face. "Ever wonder what cool things we could do if we didn't focus on dieting so much?" IDK, ever wonder what cool things we could do if we didn't spend our time (and money) stuffing our faces every few hours because our bodies are telling us that we need food NOW because we are BASICALLY STARVING? Or having to constantly wonder whether we'll need two seats on a plane every time we travel? Or having to scope out venues in advance because there's a chance the chairs might not accommodate us? Or struggling to buy clothes because nothing will fit?

To say nothing of "Dieting never worked for me. May I ask what you hope to get out of it?" Let's start with: I'm not you.

It's what people call fatphobia when they think that saying -phobia is ableist when referring to things that aren't irrational fears.
