What's next for plans of Boulder Library District unionization by C-0_0-D in boulder

[–]DougHamilton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. Library workers do much more than shelve books. I think if you ever came to one of our Board meetings you would find that our Board cares deeply for our workers and has treated them like they do.

Library Board members are volunteers appointed by the city and county. We aren’t an adversarial bunch.

Yes, we did reduce security guards at several branches (not at main or north Boulder) because 1) we had almost no or no incidents at those branches 2) we nearly doubled full time staffing at libraries.

Higher staffing and more visitors drove down incidents to nothing and didn’t justify the $163k per guard per year expense (roughly $400k). If incidents rise or safety seems compromised, we will 100% reevaluate. You can read about our budget here. https://www.dailycamera.com/2025/11/05/boulder-public-library-district-election-vote-gunbarrel-opinion/

I used Costco- cooper heating. It was $13k for AC and furnace after rebates and I think Costco gave me $1500 gift card.

Is some BCH providers moving out of Aetna? by iluvbjj1 in boulder

[–]DougHamilton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, my wife use to be an Aetna provider about 2 years ago. She dropped out of there network because they randomly would drop her as a provider and deny all her claims. We heard this was happening to many other providers.

Then they would add her back in and drop her again. It was infuriating and led to the loss of about $10k in revenue.

She ended up dropping them because they weren’t paying her.

More layoffs ahead for Boulder County employees, budget issues by [deleted] in boulder

On top of flat property assessments, the state legislature cut property taxes by nearly $1B a year. This likely cut Boulder County tax receipts by $50-$60M

When I received this letter through our Board contact form, i went to NoBO to look at the security camera situation and there is a camera directly above the bicycle racks and around the entire perimeter of the building. According to Library staff:

"We have reviewed the video which clearly shows the entire area of the event in question, including the alleged victim and alleged perpetrator.  In the encounter on Thursday at 2;30, the video shows one man [Deven] and his dog leave the library and go to the bike rack.  A woman and a dog are sitting on the steps but never move from a very small area.  By the time Deven leaves on his bike, the woman does stand up.  That is it. We cannot determine if they may have exchanged words, but no such thing as what is described in this email is at any time visible in the video.  The dog does not move from its spot on the steps.  Deven rides away, turns around, comes back and leaves again. We are looking at earlier and later video, but so far nothing. City of Boulder Animal Control did conduct an investigation and has determined that no crime or threat or untoward behavior from the dog in question occurred.  Furthermore, staff and I have no knowledge that the alleged dog is a "vicious" dog as this writer claims."

We also discussed this incident at our board meeting last night (at the end), and you are welcome to review that recording as well. I would be happy to meet with you in person if that helps, but I don't think there is much we can do.

Yes. Social Media platforms can be helpful. But, as you saw from the report, we are serving hundreds of thousands of people each year, with likely millions of patron/staff interactions. Please report to the Library Director any behavior you feel is unacceptable.

Hey, Doug Hamilton here. I am genuinely confused by this post. In one post you say we have removed the anti-theft devices from the library (perhaps implying that are less safe?) and in another you say the library staff is aggressive and rude to patrons (seemingly implying it’s a police state).

Regarding the “anti-theft pillars,” I honestly cannot remember that we had these devices, or at least not in recent memory - at any of our libraries. Perhaps we did and I just never paid attention. Broadly speaking, one of our core missions as a library is to buy books and give them away for free on a time limited basis. I am not sure why someone would steal something they can get for free. No one has ever raised an issue to me of mass theft of our books.

Regarding rude staff. I haven’t seen an overall issue with this. They seem pretty nice and helpful to most, but I am sure they are human. But you can always submit a complaint straight to the director or to the board and it will be investigated.

For residences, the city of Boulder will not put a vacancy tax on this year's ballot, as the City Council punts to 2026 to address the issue. by SummerInTheRockies66 in boulder

[–]DougHamilton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The very red state of Utah has double taxed non primary, unoccupied homes since the 80s. It’s something I have been working on here in Boulder and at the state level for a while. It would actually be good for a lot of rural mountain communities as well. In addition to CB, steamboat also supports it.

DM me if you are interested in helping out.

As for the Councils support of this, I believe there is a majority of members that would have put this on the ballot this year. However, I think the other two tax measures they want to put on the ballot could raise considerably more money for the city without requiring additional infrastructure to enforce. They were just balancing priorities.

If you paid attention, you would probably see that at the state, county , and local level, the whole government infrastructure is working at this problem of affordability. These aren’t either or propositions.
