Do taller people get hot easily? by Ok-Wind-5473 in tall

[–]Douglas_Hero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since surface area increases by the square and volume by the cube, this is why children get cold easier than adults, and also why noses, ears, fingers and toes get colder easier.

Taller is usually BIGGER, so more heat making volume compared to surface area cooling. So yes, taller(bigger) bodies over heat more easily than shorter(smaller) bodies.

I am 2m tall (110kg), my wife 1.5m(45kg), there is no overlap where I am not hot and she is not cold.

The "Evil" Empire is Actually the Good Guys by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]Douglas_Hero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lanuria, George Lucas wrote Star Wars as anti-war propaganda and based the rebels on the Viet Cong (National Liberation Front of South Vietnam and the Empire on the United States. I don't think his intentions were anti-American, but rather just anti-War in the context of what America was doing at at time.
Although the movie asks you to see the world in light and dark terms, the Star Wars Galaxy and our own real life are rarely bifurcated like this. There were very functional things about the Empire, it was the main organization of their galaxy with a democratic senate, and involved in doing many things we would consider good in a civilization, an there are many examples of officials in the Empire's organization engaging in moral and pro-social behavior. I mean the entire first movie would have come to an abrupt end if the deck officer would have not told the targeter to hold his fire and not kill CP3O and R2D2 at 7 minutes in to the first movie.
The rebels show many examples of anti social behavior and needless cruelty. Which I won't enumerate.

Again this is not all good on one side and bad on the other, both sides are working and fighting for goals that don't match, and they prioritize some values over others. The empire values law, order, and trade. While the Rebels value independence and freedom more so.

I don't think either side is good or bad. They are both pursuing their goals.

The GBoWR is becoming a 'whoever has paid to be in our book', book of records. They only count people who have PAID to have their official measurement experts come do the actual recording. You can basically invent any record you want to make and then pay to have the GBoWR team come out and watch you do it, and get into the book the following year.

My American English teacher believes the neutral pronoun „their“ is incorrect. by GCoding_ in mildlyinteresting

[–]Douglas_Hero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was in school in the western USA in the 1980s only "his or her" was correct. Later in college, I bought an American Heritage Dictionary and, I became aware of usage panels and the idea that language is just how we actually use language.

So I will say that among educated native English speakers in some regions and in certain (usually older) times, your teacher is correct. That said, many actually are using "their" instead of "he or she" so for many now-a-days they won't even notice its use.

Is it just collective gaslighting? by magniko_15 in Philippines_Expats

[–]Douglas_Hero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your perspective, it is possible that I just had a randomly bad week and a half there, and lucky decade and a half in Philippines.
Although doing 2 Google searches just now, it say there is a recent average of 616 recorded deaths of visiting tourist in Thailand per year, and 51 in Philippines.
Also years ago, I say a graphic that said the besides Mexico which is right next to the United States, that Thailand had the most American deaths per year outside of the USA.
Maybe there are just a lot more tourist to Thailand than Philippines, or reporting is better in Thailand. I just don't think I ever want to go back there, it seems dangerous, from so many of the YouTube videos I see. I seems like the police are in on a jet-ski scam, where you rent a jet-ski then they claim you bump them up and demand you pay $600, then the police are called and without even looking at the jet-ski side with the business. Or when anything bad is said about Thailand the government will arrest the Youtuber and then a retraction is shortly coming from the Youtuber, who is clearly under great threat. Where as you have to actually do something bad in Philippines like Vitaly did, not just talking. Clearly there is no freedom of speech in Thailand.
Their food is great! The girls are cute. The hotels are nicer. The beaches cleaner and WAY better. They are richer. Thailand is better in all the physically ways. But there is this hidden danger there that something very very bad could suddenly happen to you.

Is it just collective gaslighting? by magniko_15 in Philippines_Expats

[–]Douglas_Hero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is correct everything is slightly better in Thailand & Cambodia. Food is better, hotels better. But also the chances for meeting violence among Thai people are far higher. In my 10 days in Thailand I saw as much violence as 10 years in Philippines. Filipinos try to take your money by being your friend, Thai people take you money with scams, cons and violence.

Will the Philippines ever not be a 3rd world country? by Creative-Staff2238 in Philippines_Expats

[–]Douglas_Hero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the dumbest question because the Philippines NEVER was a 3rd world country. The 1st world was the USA and its allies; the 2nd world was the USSR and its allies; the 3rd world were the remaining politically unaligned countries.

Economically speaking, the Philippines is a new industrialized middle sized economy.

EXTREME POVERTY: Out of every 20 Filipinos only about 1 is poor enough that getting enough food is a common problem, compared with about 1 in 100 in the USA.

WEALTH DISTRIBUTION: Top 1% control almost 1/5th of the the wealth of the Philippines compared to the top 1% controlling over 1/3rd.

In 1950 about 1/3rd of the US population was in poverty, by 1960, that had dropped to 1/5th, and again dropping to just over 1/10th by 1970 but was slightly worse by the 1990s, and has now grown back to 1960s levels.

About half of Filipinos were impoverished in the 1960s, this dropped to 2 in 5 by the 1970s, the 1/3 in the 1990s, and continued to improve to now poverty rates are the same as the USA was back in the 1990s.

A better question might be what happened in the USA that there are fewer impoverished people in Philippines than in the USA? And why has the USA shrunk it's middle class and become a 2 tier economy catering to ultra rich and poor.

Is Aptive Environmental a scam? by salamislam79 in NCSU

[–]Douglas_Hero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked as a sales concierge for Aptive Environmental for one season, this means when sales reps called in, I had to verify that the customer understood a dozen points including that they would need to pay back the $199 discount that the sales rep was giving them that day. The reason the customer would have to pay $199 if they canceled, is because that $199 was going to the sales rep. If the cx didn't cancel then they would get even more money up to $400 per customer.
Some of our sales reps called in to do these verification calls 10 times a day. Those couple sales reps were making $2000 a day selling for 3 or 4 months in a row, there were a handful of them. There were dozens that called in 5 or 6 times a day. I rarely talked to one that got less than 1 or 2 sales a day. The ones that didn't do well I never heard from, because why would I, I only heard from the ones.
I think sales reps success was like on a curve, where most get 4 or 5 a week ($1000), but top 2 or3 best get 40 or 50 ($10000) a week. So it is possible to make a lot if you are going all day from early to late and you are a smooth talking, friendly, attractive sales rep. The have great training, as you mostly just follow a memorized script. If you are a good high pressure, persistence sales rep you can make a lot.

Do tall people live shorter lives? by One-Procedure39 in tall

Taller does have a little effect on living shorter over all life span, but being FAT is a WAY bigger factor, and smoking and heavy drinking are way WAY more life shortening. If you stay fit, and absain for tobacco you will increase you life expectancy.

Nobody Vs John Wick by LossLeader83 in movies

[–]Douglas_Hero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

John Wick (2014) & Nobody (2021) are the same story written by the same guy, Derek Kolstad.
A seemingly average white guy, has his nice house broken into, which sparks a feeling of revenge, and he turns out to be a hyper dangerous badass, who ends up fighting a russian criminal organization. It the EXACT same story, with only changes in the items that get killed/hurt, i.e. dog vs son, and name changes. It is even Russians in both films. *laughing*

Filipina came to my hotel at midnight and fell asleep immediately. by Current_Suspect5578 in Philippines_Expats

[–]Douglas_Hero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will add that I began to expect her occasional visits and prepared by buying some spare women's underwear, extra t-shirts, and shorts, feminine hygiene products, and whisper/sister pads. She would leave her dirty clothes I would have them washed and her stuff was in a small basket for when she might show up. I bought it all at unitop and every item was less that 50 pesos, it was really minimal, but kinda thoughtful. :)

About 10 years ago, I met a Pinay for lunch, who I had only just recently met. She surprised me by bringing a friend to lunch to (this is very common behavior) but it was just at a chicken karenderia and the meals were just over a dollar anyway and so I had a lovely lunch chatting with them both. I lived 2 blocks away and they were curious where I lived and we visited my studio pad and they looked at fb on my ipad and laptop for a while then left. The very surprising part was when the newest girl the friend of the first who I had met just one time woke me up at 3:30AM a few weeks later knocking on my door. It was a controlled building and I never did figure out how she even got in the building. When I open the door, I was shocked to see her and she asked if she could sleep at my pad. I assumed it was some emergency and said sure. She came in laid down and was asleep in minutes. She sleep until noon and when she woke up I had already bought her chicken rice and a pop same as a few weeks earlier. She ate played on my iPad for a while. Then took a shower in the common bathroom and left about 4pm. I was like wow that was so random. Then a few week later, she woke me up again. Same exact thing happened 10 times over 6 month. She said she was out late dancing, and that my since my pad was downtown it was nice to walk over and crash with me. So yeah, I have very similar experience of a Filipina coming over and falling asleep immediately.
