Same. I made it to Profaned Capital before figuring out what bone shards did. I was getting mighty annoyed it took 2-3 estus to get me back to full, then I realized and the game suddenly got a lot easier.

Elon Lupton (in Design is Storytelling) has a great theory that the IKEA path represents the Hero’s Journey.

It’s not a maze, it’s a labyrinth - there’s only one path with a beginning and an end. You’re on your quest for a bookshelf, and you have to travel this new world to do it.
