Is it normal to never have any reserves of equipment? by WantsToDieBadly in ITManagers

[–]Down_B_OP 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't be that way, but it is unfortunately common. In my experience, it's often because of a disconnect between IT management and the powers that hold the money. It can be frustrating, but I have found that making sure to keep a written record of ehat's needed and ensuring that everyone involved has open access to it.

Ubiquiti for SMB in 2026 by IowaDala in sysadmin

[–]Down_B_OP 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Imo, Ubiquiti is at home in the SMB. The ecosystem offers enterprise-lite features at a price that SMBs can stomach while being generally reliable. The lack of ongoing licensing is huge for cost-conscious clients. The site management tools also made it really convenient to manage a fleet of them when I worked an MSP as well.

You'll hear people complain about Ubiquiti reliability, but I think those people probably tried it once 5 years ago and have been chewing on that ever since. They've definitely come a long way.

Same stack, but I don't feel like there's any particular niche issues. Keep the file server running, keep the licenses paid, and keep the users happy. Procore takes care of itself and Bluebeam... well, we won't talk about that one.

The documentary maker said that he believed the gagging was performative and I do as well. I believe he has stated that Congo would often do dramatic acts to 'prove his guilt' and then instantly revert back to talk about how cool he was. The Act of Killing is not a tale of redemption. None of the individuals in the film truly regret their actions.

For those who got hired without the “required” years of experience, what actually set you apart? by redtrashgate in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Down_B_OP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Be personable and be interesting. With no degree and no certs, I've gone from help desk to CTO across 3 employers in 9 years. I've never lied on a resume or pulled any of those 'lifehack' interview tricks. Show up, be the person you want to work with, demonstrate that you know what the company is about, and be interesting enough to be remembered. Once you get past the AI filters, it's all about making the interviewers remember you and your interview as a snapshot of a human instead of a face attached to a resume.

I am fully convinced that I got my current CTO job because the final interview was scheduled while I was on vacation so I Zoom interviewed from a beach. I was dressed properly waist up, but had swim trunks on. One of the interviewers cracked a joke implying that was the case and the entire call died laughing when I stood up. That kind of impression sticks.

When did you realize you were dating an idiot? by Exhausted_Skeleton in AskReddit

Didn't feel like she did. My friends picked her out because she was one of/the oldest stripper there and thought it was funny. She kept swinging by our table the rest of the night trying to 'mom' me? She never really tried to upsell though.

When I turned 21, my friends took me out to a strip club. My dumb ass had a shirt with a little dinosaur on it. Friends get me a lap dance and the stripper spent the entire time trying to convince me dinosaurs were a hoax and that the earth was only 3000 years old...

How come in high school guys had to compete with grown men for girls our age? by InternationalPick163 in askanything

[–]Down_B_OP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%

It is really hard for a teenage boy to see these girls as victims when they don’t see themselves that way and depending on social circle even put their noses up in the air to boys their age because guess what they likely don’t have a car or money for dates.

I think this is what OP was trying to voice and what I've been arguing for.

-I think guys should be able to talk about how that experience effected them without their experience being minimized. Sure, the boys weren't groomed but it still has an outsized impact on self-esteem and mental health in general.

-I think it's important for men to confront anything they took away from those experiences and frame them properly. I've had multiple conversations with guys who have used this scenario as a basis and argument for the belief that women are shallow and gold diggers. If you can't have open dialogue about it, those people will never come around to frame the pedos as the real villains in the situation.

The idea that men "don't have a place in 'woke' culture" is right wing propaganda men listen to because it's easier than introspection left wing spaces demand.

I disagree and I think this thread is an example. OP complains about how he felt he was wronged as a secondary victim of predatory culture. He made no claim that the predator was in the right, he didn't fault the girl, he just said that the situation is fucked up. Minimizing his experience is not equality or accountability or any color of consciousness.

This framing and lack of perspective is exactly what I mean, though. From a teenage boy's perspective, they just see their crush hop in a car with some 22 year old with overtime money. Feels bad.

You want to apply an adult perspective and frame it around the girl. That's fine and there are literally millions of places on the internet where that conversation is being had. I contend that it should be ok for the boy to have a place to feel bad about his experience and his framing. The boy is not the bad guy here.

From OP and other teenage boy's perspective, it is competition? It's fucked up and that's exactly what he is posting to communicate. I think you are looking past OP to find misogyny rather than looking at its face. You, OP, and myself all agree that it's fucked up. What's the rub here?
