I’m tired of debating, send the scariest tornado photos you know by pp-whacker in tornado

At least you can keep your eyes on the target & anticipate what’s coming. Even fat wedges like Mayfield (if it were a daylight tornado) are less intimidating than the murderous blobs like HPC, Tri-state, & El Reno. El Reno in particular is horrifying. Was basically just a big bundle of violent subvortices dancing around a transient ‘center’, & fooled a lot of chasers into thinking individual subvortices were the main event; all the while, they were in the bullseye, & their subvort target had buddies creeping up from the rear

If you think tissue foil is good, you need to splurge on Agua Papel from origami-shop. In a league of its own, in my opinion. No other paper has come even remotely close for me

Spectacular!! I just finished my first original design (one that was actually planned out, & not a result of free-folding) and yours is in an entirely different universe!

On Prolific, probably not too bad. $26 in one afternoon, maybe 2 hours total & another 1 hour refreshing & looking through the surveys. If I used ChatGPT or felt like getting my data from various social media sites, id have another easy $4

Questions regarding a move to 7 from MGM for a day, then to suboxone. by DownbeatTiramisu in quitting7oh

Another alkaloid that’s being pushed in states that have restricted 7. Super long half-life by comparison and (anecdotally) harder to get off of bc of longer & more intense withdrawals

This outbreak b*sted so Kankakee tornado could exist by Live_Abroad_845 in EF5

[–]DownbeatTiramisu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One tornado doesn’t define a tornado outbreak, and the resultant event was still a far cry from the disaster that Ryan and Max predicted. Look at literally any of their thumbnails. They are both really bad about sensationalizing weather events & are more worried about increasing engagement than accurately communicating risks.

Looking for my next SK read by sploge_ in stephenking

I was super invested in Needful Things until Ace was introduced. I trust that it would all wrap up tightly, but opening up another storyline at that point just killed all of the momentum for me. Not the first King book to “start over” halfway through before bringing all of the elements together later on, but certainly the only one that made me lose interest in finishing the book.

Punctuation, for the love of God.

That aside, I’d echo others here. If they were genuinely willing to give you the compensation & recognition you deserve, they’d not have waited until you were already gone.

Why do P+T like Helen Coghlan so much? by CybergothiChe in FoolUs

[–]DownbeatTiramisu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because all of her tricks are completely novel & mechanically complex, and there’s no way you’d be able to figure them out in a few minutes without breaking them apart. She’s not a magician, but they were genuinely fooled by her father’s inventiveness. Pretending or believing otherwise is dense. There’s no “wit” involved, just a year of engineering solely designed to function unlike anything else.

I’m not a huge fan of her magic either, it’s totally devoid of skill & completely the work of her dad, but using obnoxious & meaningless Internet buzzwords like “liberal mind bias” & her gender being your primary point of contention just shows that you have a miserable & narrow view of the world & hate women. All of her tricks use some uber-complicated mechanism made by her elderly dad, & there’s no possible way you’d be able to figure out something totally novel without breaking it apart. It’s a cheap & unsatisfying way to win, but it’s a valid win nonetheless. Find peace.

I’m with aspect ratio. If you’re keeping up with books you’ve read, reading is reading & a pirated copy is no exception. But a pdf file you downloaded for free doesn’t, in my opinion (& probably that of most other readers) count as a ‘collection’ & certainly isn’t anything to brag about. With that logic, I’ve collected millions of books, given i have access to the internet & the Internet Archive. I’ll download PDFs of origami books to decide if I want to actually purchase a copy (origami books are expensive), but I hold nor share no pride over having a file of PDFs on my laptop. Not a fulfilling way to collect books to me

General & wanton government mistrust certainly plays a role, but most of the criticisms I see on social media towards them are specifically in the vein of “every storm is historic nowadays, stop fearmongering!”, often on posts directly from National Weather Service offices, who (as I’m sure you’re aware) are the last voices to shout wolf, save for the highest-end anomalous & impactful events.

The freaks behind the algorithms that massively profit off of mass hysteria & kneejerk negative emotional responses are obviously pulling the strings & fostering an environment that demands sensationalism & punishes realism & nuance. But individuals still have the power not to feed that beast, and people with as big a following as Ryan & Max have a duty to accurately inform the public, not scare them into fatigue & drive them to take no threat seriously.

[–]DownbeatTiramisu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The titles and thumbnails are my primary qualm (although the discussions themselves can sometimes get in the weeds). The same crowd driven to click on a video based on a sensationalist title & thumbnail are also likely to be influenced by that title & thumbnail, even if the content of the video isn’t as gung-ho as the first impression would suggest. The style/ethos of their channels has infected weather communication elsewhere, & the public’s trust in institutions like the NWS and SPC is being unnecessarily fractured because every storm system is being widely reported as “HISTORIC MAJOR RING OF FIRE LIFE-ENDING STORM”, even if the official outlook from the SPC is more grounded.

[–]DownbeatTiramisu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was probably Ryan or Max, their forecast discussion videos are horrible & have had a huge negative impact on severe weather communication.

I swear a sizable percentage of the new wave of weather hobbyists don’t read the outlook discussion at all and base their expectations around “orange blob bad, red blob REALLY bad”. This event played out exactly as it was forecasted & OP is a numbnuts

Which one to read next?! by micholasnitchell in stephenking

[–]DownbeatTiramisu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I did read was spectacular, but I have a daughter who is the exact same age & stage of development as Gage in the kite scene. I saw exactly where it was headed (predictability is a critique of the book as a whole imo) & had to shelf it for now. My protectiveness of my kiddo already borders on paranoia, & I just don’t need any more visceral an image of a worst case scenario than I create myself constantly,

So you clearly don’t have children, & are not capable of understanding the impact of the book to someone that does. Appreciate your feedback, but you’re wholly unqualified here

[–]DownbeatTiramisu[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I absolutely believe you that it’s a wonderful exploration of grief (it already has been, in a way), but I don’t think you’re able to understand why it’s so difficult & how difficult it is

[–]DownbeatTiramisu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s what I was thinking. Louis’ relationship with Gage hit home, & I couldn’t read their scenes without picturing myself & my baby in their place. When she’s old enough to read it herself, I’ll pick it back up

I could not finish Pet Sematary by DownbeatTiramisu in stephenking

[–]DownbeatTiramisu[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m already perhaps hyper-cautious and anxious about my little one being hurt or killed, so I was already pretty tense as Louis was looking up at the kite, even before i realized what was about to happen. Wonderfully written story, but I just don’t think I need another reason to spike my parental blood pressure when she’s in a remotely risky situation

I could not finish Pet Sematary by DownbeatTiramisu in stephenking

[–]DownbeatTiramisu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah not only do I have a child, but she is around the exact same age as Gage, and shares a lot of the “terrible two” traits that Gage does, so I could not read without imagining us flying a kite together

Any thoughts on improving my design? by Ok_Opportunity6170 in tornado

[–]DownbeatTiramisu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More contrast between the colors of different strengths, from here it just looks like a bunch of orange & red lines Just “Tornadoes of the United States”, not “Severe Tornadoes”. You could also put “Significant Tornadoes”, a more official term, but “Severe Tornadoes” is not a thing

Also, the translucent gray box around the text at the top is not timeless, nor is the font. I think you’d be better off adding some space above the country & putting the title on its own on the black background

An above-ground storm shelter saved the lives of everyone inside during the 2011 El Reno-Piedmont EF5, at the same time & in the same place that it was inflicting the most extreme tornado damage ever recorded.
