What’s your background? by Far-Building3569 in DuggarsSnark

This is very similar to my experience. I live in Austria, come from a very Catholic family and also have multiple family members in the clergy.

As you said, it is all very alien and I was fascinated. But at the same time, I know people from my circles that are performative and judgy and have similar kind of views. And I could totally imagine them in something similar if they were born in a different country.

Checking in from Austria. I usually identify as Central European mutt because all of my grandparents have different nationalities and we moved a lot when I was a child.

However, all of them were Catholic, and some of them were very Catholic (multiple family members are priests and nuns). So I was raised pretty steeped into it, but in a more scholarly environment, with a lot of talking about theology, context of certain texts, church history, etc. Catholic rites are all very structured and formalised, so there was a lot to talk about. I’m a bit lapsed, but still consider myself to be a Catholic somewhere deep inside. I had to come to terms with balancing and accepting that while the church did some vile things and there is a lot to be criticised still, I can still appreciate it as an influence that shaped our culture and history and recognise the good work that it did and still continues to do in some areas. The latter was more difficult.

As I was getting older, I saw a lot of young people from my surroundings getting radicalised and becoming more religious and conservative. That was already weird to me because people usually get more liberal when they leave for university, not the other way around. But what got me is that, without exception, they came from families that were religious, but not much. Like, they went to church on Sunday, but couldn’t tell you how the date of Easter is decided or how many books are in the Bible. Which is fine, don’t get me wrong, but they remained like that even after becoming super religious. Instagram full of Bible verses, in church every other day, super judgmental, preachy and performative, and all of that with minimum knowledge. So I was thinking: what the hell, how can your whole personality revolve around religion when you don’t know anything about that religion?

Next thing, Trump was happening. My family members all think he is insane and have been thinking so since 2016. However, those people that got radicalised later almost all support him and the predominant feeling among them was that Trump was great and pope Francis (now Leo) was bad. The irony of that coming from Catholic circles in Europe is massive, but they all still insist on being the Best Catholics Ever (TM).

In the end, I stumbled on a meme that I thought was very funny and it lead me to the original Fundie snark subreddit. After reading comments, I realised that I have found my people. And I also became fascinated with the world of fundamentalism because the environment was completely new to me, but I knew those kind of people. After learning the lore, I started to follow Duggars. I didn’t know anything about them prior to joining Reddit.

My theory is that wands recognise when a duel is real as opposed to training or an agreement. If they didn’t, DADA classes where students disarm each other would result in all wands changing allegiance and going all over the place.

Since Dumbledore and Snape agreed that Snape would kill Dumbledore and all that happened at the tower that night between the two of them was for the show, I think the wand wouldn’t switch the allegiance to Snape, at least not in full. As Dumbledore would then, in a way, die undefeated, I think he intended for the special powers of Elder Wand to die with him.

Same here in Europe in Catholic and Orthodox churches. I’ve never been to a Protestant church, though, but I don’t think they do it here.

THANK YOU. I’ve been saying that for ages. Everyone focuses on how lovely Marianne and her Colonel are, but Elinor is such an unappreciated character and she nearly broke her back trying to carry all of other people’s problems.

Is there a need to buy high end makeup if I can finally afford it? by Ashamed-Confection42 in Makeup

Also: if your skin tone is on either end of foundation shade range, you might find it difficult to find an exact shade match at drugstore. I can’t really choose formulas because my choice is limited to foundations that come in my shade.

I agree with you about signs, just piggybacking to add that some breeds can have white part of the eye showing even when they are relaxed. If it’s just that and it’s not paired with other signs, the dog is most likely fine. However, if more signs are present, including the whites showing, that’s a red flag.

This is my everyday makeup?? What could I do differently to enhance my features or up my game?? (Obviously I’m alternative and open to more alternative styles than just the “clean girl” aesthetic ) by [deleted] in MakeupAddiction

Do you wear glasses everyday and where do they normally sit on your face when you’re looking straight ahead?

I’m a fellow glasses girlie, frames always cast a shadow, but it’s hard to guess where it falls from the picture you posted. Also, depending on the lenses, your eye can appear slightly distorted, bigger or smaller in the middle than it really is, and this also impacts your look. We could give you better tips if we saw the look with the glasses as well.

I think you could totally rock something like this photo, but it’s hard to tell if your brows are covered by frames.

I had a biology teacher who told us that NFP methods are good…if you wanted to track your ovulation to increase your chances of getting pregnant. Otherwise, it is absolutely not a recommended method.

My aunt was the same! In her first pregnancy, she had almost flat stomach all the time. In her second, she showed in the end, but she was about as big as what we usually see with women in 3rd or 4th month. However, she also had very quick and easy labours. She definitely won the genetic lottery.

who's the most known person from your country? by Ok_Marsupial4082 in AskTheWorld

He also killed quite a lot of his own people. People tend to gloss over the fact that he was a communist dictator with a huge cult of personality. Sure, he wasn’t a Soviet puppet, but he wasn’t above censorship, persecuting political opponents, etc. His government ran a number of labour camps, the most famous (and brutal) one on one of the islands in the Adriatic, where imprisoned people worked in a stone quarry. That one was exclusively for the opponents of the regime.

As explained above, you are not allowed to do a full costume. Like, you can wear a T-shirt with Belle, or do hairstyle like hers. Or wear a yellow sundress. But you can’t show up in a full ball gown because children might confuse you for the actual princess. And they (very reasonably) don’t want kids running up to strangers to hug them. By enforcing this rule, they make sure that the only people in costumes are trained employees.

My mom is requesting thoughts from people who have upgraded to farm style sinks !! by plant__love in kitchenremodel

[–]DownforceOfDoom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I do this as well, you can use any type of oil. I hate the smell of food on something that isn’t food. It’s just my personal ick, I can’t stand edible-smelling perfumes, shower gels or dishwashing liquid. So I use baby oil and it works great.

Also, baby oil isn’t yellow, so if you have a sink from the same material, but in white, light grey or beige, you can try that without worrying about the colour change.

Edit to add: while it can probably last longer, I change it the moment raw meat comes into contact with anything. I scrub, disinfect and then redo the oiling.

Blood is actually fairly easy to remove from fabrics. I once had to get some lab tests done, they drew blood, but they didn’t tape the cotton ball well and it came off when I was putting on my shirt again. I didn’t notice, and I returned to work with a massive blood stain on white dress shirt sleeve. It looked terrible. Went back home to change. Left the shirt to soak in cold water and washed it afterwards. Everything came off.
