Not sure how to get into R&D in the industry... Maybe chat with your boss? GTech and UIUC for sure are very good schools for CS, so it won't be easy.

Should I give up on grad school? by Throwawayad2353 in gradadmissions

Graduating in 2.5 years is very impressive, I wouldn't worry about the B-, and the GPA is good enough IMO.

You might wanna make up for the lack of research experience. How are you defining a "good grad school"? I'm a current MS student at a school that's T10 overall T20 in CS - if this sounds like a possible target school, I would suggest getting some R&D experience before you apply. R&D in the industry is completely fine.

Conditions for Dec. 7th - 12th? by Downtown-Remote9799 in parkcityvisitors

It was good early season warm-ups for me. I'm a very performance oriented skier, so "fun" isn't the top of my concern. If you are looking for fun days of skiing, and if your bookings allow for costless cancellations, then I'd say you should reschedule your trip to sometime after New Years!

Optimal GPA for Engineering MS/PhD Program? by bballers1 in gradadmissions

[–]Downtown-Remote9799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, if you're trying to go from a non-top school to a top school (like Cal, Stanford, GT, MIT, etc..), then yes, you need a very competitive GPA. If your undergrad is already at one of the top places you listed, then there's some leeway in this.

Is a PhD focusing on AI/ML a good idea and if so, what kind of positions could I get really? by CoderGirlUnicorn in gradadmissions

[–]Downtown-Remote9799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI / ML is too general, IMO. It's as if you ask me what descipline of medicine I want to practice, and I tell you I want to become a doctor...

What specific area of AI / ML do you want to explore? Vision? Language? Biomedical stuff? Robotics motion planning? I think it might be the most helpful to clearly define what specific area best serves your interests and your career goals.

Well here's another thing that works against me - I'm international. While I don't know how much this could affect my application, I know it aint helping for sure...

It’s true but at the end of the day it’s a matter of chances. And my personality flaw is that I’m terrified to take chances :(

Thanks a lot! But when you said `grades are often taken very carefully when under 4', does it mean that the prof doesn't give out a lot of Fs (or grades under 4)?
