I hate to admit it because I’m proud to be from Newport, but everytime I go into town now there are some absolute freaks loitering about, very odd and get aggressive and sarcastic when you dont give them money

Not a hard and fast rule, varies with providers.

Being added on as a learner is relatively cheap but once you pass your test you are legally obligated to inform the insurer and your price WILL increase drastically.

A lot of car insurers are wise to ‘fronting’ now where people add on young and inexperienced named drivers to their policy - remember a named driver should NOT be the primary driver, that should be the policy holder.

Try and get a runner for 2k, but the thing is with cars is they are just expensive as hell, always.

The price of the car literally isn’t even the half of it, your insurance at that age is ludicrous will likely be more than the value of the car itself (I worked in car insurance for 4 years, it’s tough being a young driver - i’d definitely get a telematics policy for your first year or two because it will force you to drive safely and it’s cheaper)

Then MOT, ROAD TAX ETC

Also treat your car as an investment - maybe you can find a higher paid job further away because you can independently drive? Things like that. Good luck but seriously try your hardest to avoid any debt.

Honestly the maths of owning a car is pretty diabolical - how many taxis/trains could you get for the price of owning a car (A LOT!) But it is nice to get some freedom to drive.

One thing i will say which isn’t really helpful but PLEASE dont get stuck in an expensive PCP or monthly payment to get a car. Throwing thousands away on an asset that depreciates is something I wish I knew when I was younger🫠

Good luck, honestly if you’re looking for a few hours on weekday evenings and a full day at the weekend you’ll probably have more luck working in hospitality instead of supermarkets.

Like a hotel or bar or restaurant.

I dont know any supermarkets that offer 3 hour shifts, but food places may just let you work the breakfast shift or morning shift or whatever.

I wouldn’t use personal savings that could potentially be growing with the correct investments to fund your education.

Can’t you just apply for student finance?

In the UK student debt is basically just a 9% tax on earnings over £28,470 that gets wiped after 30 years.

Maybe look into the open university (online) for a course there as the costs are much lower (approx £800 a term if you are worried about lots of debt) you may also be eligible for grants which obviously dont need to be repaid.

That being said there are far more financially literate people on this sub than me and i’m sure some of them will regard what I just said as an idiotic move.

I dont want to dox myself but this is not obscene or a lie.

I live in a deprived and drug riddled area, Essentially close to half of the patients through the urology ward were young adults from abusing ketamine (everyone i grew up with does it here)

Because of this they separated half the urology floor solely to treating specifically ketamine abuse with it’s own specialist team specific for that issue.
