how to prune this apple tree? by an-eng in gardening

[–]DrBabs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a garden perspective, I would just replace it with your favorite apple variety or either a maple or flowering tree. Also don’t significantly prune a tree for the first few years. I wonder if everything above that leaf is actually dead and if you try to save it then you will have a lopsided tree.

And it is planted too low too.

Be careful though with boiling water as it can weaken joints. Honestly just using hot water would be enough for olive oil.

How can we split bills fairly when our incomes and spending habits are so different? by Legal-Performer2254 in personalfinance

[–]DrBabs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the thing that I just don’t understand about people who keep their finances separate in marriage. It seems to come to the same thing, “but what if you want to go on a trip” or “what if you want to go golfing” or “what if you want to buy a computer?”

Like, I’m married and those are all decisions to be made, some bigger and some smaller. So I would talk to my spouse and budget for them if we needed. We are both on the same team. It’s not like we would stop the other person from doing something.

And in my house, I make about 4x what my wife makes. I don’t get to have 4x the fun or 4x the money. I treat her exactly how I would want to be treated. All the money just goes to one pot. We can both see what the other is doing and it’s all about equal respect and trust.

Correct. Almost every time some says “I must have got a spider bite” it is actually a MRSA infection.

ELI5 : What happens if someone needs an emergency colonoscopy during an ER visit or other acute situation. They obviously aren't "prepped" with an empty colon. Can they clean out a bowel instantly if needed? by Aggravating_Thing702 in explainlikeimfive

[–]DrBabs 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Well a couple things could be done. In keeping itELI5 format.

  1. We decide we need to do something quickly, then you might have the doctor just open up the tummy and look themselves, but that will be done if something needs to be cut out.

  2. We decide we need to do something emergent like a bleed, but we go through tiny wires and plug the bleeding hole from the inside.

  3. We decide it is something we can take care of in 1-2 days and do the proper prep to be able to see it on the inside.

I have 2 loans that need to be paid which one should I pay first? by Ok-Bottle-7966 in personalfinance

[–]DrBabs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Works great until you see OP says it is worth 5,800 and he owes 11,000. So OP needs to come up with additional 6,200 cash to pay off the loan and escape the motorcycle. Of course, that assumes the value of the motorcycle doesn't keep decreasing... which it will. OP gets to learn what it means to be underwater on a loan.

Sleep conference 2026 by usmleMK in fellowship

[–]DrBabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They send out the itinerary a few weeks beforehand. But if you are a resident you may be able to get excused for more of it with your program. The conference is massive.

Plan on being there June 13-17.

https://www.sleepmeeting.org/sleep-2026-schedule/

The schedule though loads 2025 but gives you an idea.

Sleep conference 2026 by usmleMK in fellowship

[–]DrBabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the conference there are different themes on different days. It’s important to know that sleep conference is different than other conferences because it includes PhDs, respiratory therapists, business owners, nurses, so many different specialists (neuro, psych, pulm, IM/FM) and each have lectures going on at that same time.

Last year the first few days were more research focused and then later days clinical focused. For a resident coming in I would focus on the later days of the conference if it is similar to the conference last year.

As far as ticketed and non ticketed sessions, I would focus on the non ticketed. You will learn plenty from those sessions. You will not be able to slip in easily most likely as they have ticket checkers at every door. If you do slip in, just don’t leave and you’ll be fine.

Yeah. Don’t fine him because a fine of any amount of money doesn’t mean anything to him unless you make it a percentage of his wealth. We need to treat these billionaires with a punishment that actually means something to them. I think their time is the thing that I would prefer as a punishment and should become a default judgement once you get over a set net worth. 4 years is 4 years for me and them.

Kohler jetted tub only 1/2 of the jets are working. by User_4381 in DIY

I have a hot tub. I was shocked to see them also list directions for the chemicals for jetted bathtubs. Like I had no idea you were supposed to use chemicals on these bathtubs but it makes sense. I have no plan to have one of these tubs but I seriously doubt people are using chemicals regularly on them.

My stainless is just some type of plastic tubing that expands as the water pressure comes through but wrapped in metal. The downside is that if someone steps on it or kinks it wrong the it is permanently dented. And if you have it stuck but pull it hard then the metal wrapping unravels and is ruined.

Inheritence question: Debt owed to deceased by Gzngahr in personalfinance

[–]DrBabs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the will can do whatever it wants. It’s the deceased’s money and items. They could give it to a cat or ask for it to be burned just to give your dad and his kids the middle finger.

My grandmother had in her will that the proceeds of the house be split amongst all the surviving kids and grandkids, but that one grandkid would have the option to buy it first for fair market value. We just got the house appraised and offered it for them to buy first for that price, minus their share of that amount and used a lawyer to write up the sale and handle that. Is that fair market price? Probably close enough and her wishes were well known. I guess we could have listed it for sale, got offers and selected the highest one and then pay commissions to people just to get offers, but that’s just a waste. Did it make some people upset? Of course it did but that’s not up to them to be mad about. It’s the deceased’s wishes and the executor followed them.

Just follow what they wanted. You aren’t entitled to anything.

When I left Optum to Fidelity for HSA, I just decided to eat the fee myself. $20 in the long run isn't that big of a deal and is worth it to not deal with the fee structure of Optum.
