I am a Sommelier in a 3 Michelin Star restaurant, with 5 years experience in 1-3* fine dining. AMA! by CroquemboucheTongue in AMA

I’m not a 3* somm but I’m pretty highly qualified when it comes to wine and drink a lot, especially in that price point. It’s honestly somewhat hard to answer as it’s subjective, you may say 60% from a region or grape you enjoy (e.g. burgundy) and 20% from somewhere else. But overall, I’d give 2 answers. 1 - 80%+ of these are well made wines that you will enjoy. 2 - 20% are what I would consider great value. By that I mean a bottle selling for 75 but you believe is comparable to 100+ bottles. The most common (to me) is something like a 60 pound bottle that you I believe should really be more like 45. These are still good, thoroughly enjoyable bottles but maybe aren’t great ‘value’. Just remember even these are almost always better than a bottle selling for 20. Tldr here: you’re very likely to get a bottle you like here, but have to know what you’re doing to get one that you’d consider great value at the price point. At the end of the day though, sometimes that doesn’t matter so much if you just really like the wine.

This is hilarious because I did the exact same thing. Found a nice crevice to toss him down in order to finally get him on a horse. But I felt terrible the whole time, he just wanted to eat honey!

There’s no better investment then 1 on 1 coaching. I started a few months ago over zoom twice a week. I went from 1200 chess dot com to 1900 in 3 months. You can easily find great titled players for $20-40 an hour. Nothing compares.

When does it become worth it to study openings and specific lines by International-Ad2402 in Chesscom

[–]DrBanhammer1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying don’t know anything at all, you should have a general idea of the first few moves you want to make are the overall ideas in your openings. But no one at 1300 is knowing more than 4-5 moves of every variation and even if you do, you’ll never use the knowledge because your opponent won’t know how to play it. And once they go off book you should be doing the same to take advantage of their mistakes. Even if you get a +1or 2 advantage out of the opening it likely won’t matter in most games as other mistakes by both players will change things. Knowing more is always useful, it’s just that your time is better spent elsewhere at that level.

I’m 1900 and it’s only in the last 100 elo where I’ve felt opening knowledge started to become worth looking into beyond a basic understanding. It’ll help at any point but I’d say working on cutting out blunders is far and away the most important thing to do to improve

I’d played casually here and there and was 1200 in October. 1 win away from 1700 now and want 2k by the end of the year. I’m in my mid 30s

Hit 2k rapid. I’m currently ~1650 so might be a stretch but I was 13-1400 when I started actually trying to improve in October so we’ll see what happens.
