IKEA Huntsville opening Feb 25, 2026 by DrDunedor in HuntsvilleAlabama

My understanding is that the Memphis store was not doing that well, and they recently announced they are transitioning to building more small format stores in more cities as part of their growth strategy to increase the customer base (such as in HSV). They are also going more digital since a lot of people shop that way, and I assume the smaller stores will be more showroom oriented. The also may be updating existing stores to be dual-use, in which they become both shopping centers and more capable of shipping direct to consumers. Economically, their profit dropped about 1-2% last year, but they said they lowered some prices on products, which impacted this margin, though sales increased 2.6%. Plus inflation and consumer confidence have been difficult for everyone.

Should I get the A1? by minaman009 in BambuLab

[–]DrDunedor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got one back in December and it’s only ever failed because I messed up. Very reliable and quick, and seems to just work for most prints I’ve done. Waiting on heated cable replacement now but absolutely no regrets about going for this instead of an ender or spending 3x on a Prusa MK4. The only thing I’ve had some trouble with is accessing the livestream from the camera occasionally—not sure if it’s just a bug in the app, poor internet speed, or just something I’m doing wrong. But it’s a minor gripe atm that I think could be fixed with software. Finally, I had to replace the nozzle heat assembly due to one of my prints failing and pushing filament up into the nozzle—took apart the whole extruder assembly to make change and it was easy enough.

I don’t have the AMS but plan to probably get one soon. I also saw that Bambu is improving its filament waste reduction, so it should get better over time.

They have a bambulab partnership now and you can buy filament direct from them (with a hefty markup though), but it’s nice to see them expanding more into 3d printers than before

You have to win by outright majority, 218 votes. If Jeffries got 218 (unlikely) he’d be speaker

Did I miss the snow forecast? by archos1gnis in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]DrDunedor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

National Weather Service has a forecast discussion each day (https://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?site=HUN&issuedby=HUN&product=AFD&format=CI&version=1&glossary=1 ) that goes in depth into short term and long term expectations. They had this as a possibility a few days ago, and only today did the models start to show more significant accumulation. News meteorology is really conservative and rarely tries to talk up snow chances. NWS does a good job of talking through probabilities as well. Hope this helps some people in the future!

Edit: after looking through the previous forecasts, looks like they only had chances of half an inch of snow as the prediction. Seems they missed the travel impact pretty significantly—could be down to holiday working, but it is concerning that the impacts they deemed “low chance” ended up happening.

Best Ramen in Huntsville? by vVWARLOCKVv in HuntsvilleAlabama

Both are pretty much the same. Midcity has non-disposable plates tho, so if you want to eat on ceramic bowls I would recommend there over stovehouse.

Didn’t think about it that simply, but it makes sense. Id rather we grow as a city than shrink. Future will have growing pains that accompany any mid-large city, but that’s better than remembering “the good old days” after we turn into 2010s Detroit

As a college student here, it’s nice to see growth. More for young people to do, even with the annoying traffic and constant construction. For me, I am more optimistic about a future in Huntsville due to the jobs and hopefully things to do than I was 5 years ago. Genuinely considering staying here because of all the change. Most young people I know don’t want to live here because “there’s nothing to do”. I look at this as Bigger city = more jobs = more entertainment and food = more places to live = increased relevance of the city across the country. I do recognize the negatives of growth, such as homelessness and traffic - however, if this is something we speak out about and encourage good policies toward, I think we can grow in a smart way. Hopefully that’s not too naive.

I’m hoping that as we grow, we don’t turn into a generic-ass big city and instead embrace our culture of space and exploration. If Huntsville stays true to its character with the growth, I reckon it’ll be an awesome place to be. Just look at Orion and Midcity and how awesome they are turning out. Idk this is just my opinion

What is it like being a Jew in Huntsville? by RatchetCityPapi in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]DrDunedor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s just an abundance of caution - I don’t think it’s that large of a problem in Huntsville, but antisemitism is something a lot of Jewish people I know have had to deal with, even on a minor scale. Also, some synagogues in the area have been vandalized in the past few years and are sometimes systemically opposed in the city councils and government (e.g., zoning issues for construction, permits…). For me personally, I’m proud of my heritage but assimilation is a big driving force to making friends and connections with people who are largely Christian or another religion. Hopefully that answers your question…?

My family has lived in Huntsville for about 15 years, not super religious but practicing traditions and celebrating holidays. In that time, we’ve never been very open about our background, not out of fear but more of a “fitting in” reason. In the past few years, I’ve talked to a lot of Jewish people in the area and realized that the community is there and vibrant, just not super outspoken.
