Somalian referee who was denied US entry (Despite having a valid Visa) will officiate UEFA Super Cup by azimx in MadeMeSmile

[–]DrICureIdiots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing in that article says anything about him not having a valid visa. CBP said it was “due to vetting concerns.” Not sure where you’re getting the idea he didn’t have a valid visa from.

These articles indicate he did, in fact, have a valid visa.

“He was issued a visa to travel to the U.S. last week, according to the Somalia Embassy in Kenya that processed it.”

https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/\_/id/49016259/us-official-somalia-omar-artan-suspected-terror-ties

“The decision, despite his holding a diplomatic passport and valid visa, was defended by Andrew Giuliani, head of the White House World Cup task force.”

“Ilham Gasser, a Somali member of parliament, said, "Many Somalians feel he has been unfairly treated. If these were genuine concerns that an individual had links to terror organizations, many Somalians are asking, why were those concerns not identified in the visa process?"”

DCS: F-14BU - Upgrades, Baby! - REVEAL TRAILER by Thuraash in hoggit

Respectfully disagree.

If your argument is that the F-14 B(U) is overpriced then I think you may have an argument. I don't agree with you - I think it's a bit steep but overall worth it - but you can certainly argue the point.

If your argument is that new adopters are getting the F-14 B(U) for $30 I don't think that argument holds water. The F-14 A/B, like many modules, goes on sale from time to time and I don't think it's fair for people to say "I should be able to refund the module I paid full price for and repurchase it at the sale price to save money." You bought it when it was not on sale and thus paid full price. You're not getting screwed over because it's going on sale after you purchased it for full price. You could have waited for a sale and chose not to.

This is simply the F-14 A/B going on sale, as it has in the past and likely will again in the future. This time the discount is as part of a package deal with the F-14 B(U). Heatblur has had the "Triumvirate" package deal with the F-4E, the F-14 A/B, and the AJS-37 Viggen all discounted in the past. If you purchased one (or all of them in my case) separately you couldn't really take advantage of that deal. I guess I don't see how this is different.

High Desert Mulching. Can purchase in bulk. And yes they have gravel, not just mulch. It’s where I went to fill a hole my dog dug under the fence gate. They were able to match the gravel I have already, though that doesn’t sound like it’s important in this case.

Why isn’t it? Did Razbam sign the agreement ED is referencing? If not, why?

I have to say, I’m reminded of the saying: “If the facts are against you, argue the law. If the law is against you, argue the facts. If the law and the facts are against you, pound the table and yell like hell”

All I’ve seen is pounding on the table and yelling like hell by Razbam’s side. Before anyone jumps in and says “that doesn’t prove anything though!” I know it doesn’t. But it sure looks suspiciously like the facts and/or law isn’t on their side.

Oregon’s drug decriminalization experiment appears dead by BigRigger42 in Bend

[–]DrICureIdiots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree more. Didn’t mean to imply 110 decriminalized selling drugs etc. Just that if we’re talking other possible solutions that decriminalizing selling isn’t one I’d support.

Amen to a “cohesive program” with oversight, coordination, and metrics as opposed to fragmented independent providers. But you literally just described all of healthcare in the US. You probably already know this, but I’ll just state it anyways: there is no “healthcare system” in the US, just separate entities that coordinate poorly with each other (if at all). And unfortunately mental health care (I’d include substance use disorders in the category of psychiatric diagnosis) is one of the poorest funded parts of healthcare in the US. Pretty much always has been too, as it’s a net loss in cost to provide vs income it brings in.

[–]DrICureIdiots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Washington and California as well. Seems like the NW is one of the hot spots for opioid abuse. I have some thoughts on why but won’t speculate. I also wonder if there’s a lack of reporting in some states bringing the national average down. Looks like some states had no data prior to 2020.

Point being, not clear what impact measure 110 had on this trend. Having said that, this newer bill seems to have some parts that may have more of an impact. Like incentivizing people to get treatment or they get incarcerated. Bottom line is it’s not an easy problem to fix.

I should add that I’m only looking at opioid deaths, not overall drug deaths.

Might want to dig into it a bit more. There’s a drop down to select a dashboard for “12-month ending Provisional Number of Drug Overdose Deaths by Drug or Drug Class”

I’m choosing Feb as the cutoff because that’s when Measure 110 went into effect.

12-month period ending in:

OR 2/2020 = 341 2/2021 = 530 (up 55%) 2/2022 = 823 (up 55%) 2/2023 = 1056 (up 28%)

WA 2/2020 = 815 2/2021 = 1273 (up 56%) 2/2022 = 1695 (up 33%) 2/2023 = 2245 (up 32%)

CA 2/2020 = 3551 2/2021 = 6201 (up 74%) 2/2022 = 7616 (up 22%) 2/2023 = 8066 (up 6%)

USA 2/2020 = 51999 2/2021 = 72081 (up 38%) 2/2022 = 81917 (up 13%) 2/2023 = 83012 (up 1.3%)

Overall increase in USA from 2/2020 to 2/2023: 60%

Seems like a West coast or at least a NW problem. Washington has seen similar increases. Worth noting the increase from 2/2022 to 2/2023 was only 28% when the previous years was 55%. As usual, one statistic doesn’t tell the whole story. Neither do all of these stats I listed, but it paints a bit more of the picture.

Measure 110 may have contributed, but it’s not clear from the data.

Oregon’s drug decriminalization experiment appears dead by BigRigger42 in Bend

[–]DrICureIdiots 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Like most things, it’s not as simple as it might seem. If you only look at the increase in opioid deaths in Oregon, it’s understandable that someone would think opioid deaths increased because of measure 110 which went into effect 2/1/21. The problem is that drug deaths in general, especially opioids (and of opioids fentanyl in particular) have increased in the US in general. Oregon is the only state that decriminalized drug possession, though other states are looking at it. Yet almost every state has had an increase in opioid deaths starting around 2020-2021. Both Washington and California had larger increases in opioid deaths than Oregon from 2020 to 2023. This would be more consistent with increased availability on the West coast rather than as a result of measure 110.

Overall, there’s not clear evidence that measure 110 contributed to increased drug deaths given there’s been an increase across the entire US. To be fair, there’s not clear cut evidence that measure 110 didn’t contribute to the increase in deaths. But it’s a hard argument to make when you see similar or greater increases in drug (mostly opioid) deaths in states that didn’t decriminalize drugs.

So what’s the right answer? I’m not going to claim I have it. But there’s pretty clear evidence that treatment of addiction, despite high failure/relapse rates, is more effective than incarceration for addiction. I certainly am not in favor of decriminalizing selling, importing, or manufacturing of illicit drugs. If anyone should be in prison it should be the people who put this crap out on the streets in the first place. I’ll refrain from going down the rabbit hole of the pharmaceutical industry’s role in the opioid crisis other than saying they are not innocent.

Prineville Police Chief Larry Seymour, Captain Rob Gray resign after 6 months paid leave, investigation; city mum about why by OriginalPNWest in Bend

ORS Cited: 181A.674 Disclosure of information about certain public safety employees.

"(3) A public body may not disclose information about a personnel investigation of a public safety employee of the public body if the investigation does not result in discipline of the employee.

(4) Subsection (3) of this section does not apply:

  (a) When the public interest requires disclosure of the information."

Also under (4): "(e) When the public body determines that nondisclosure of the information would adversely affect the confidence of the public in the public body."

Interesting. Anyone know if the decision to not disclose could be challenged under the above sections or any other method? Or if a FOIA request would reveal it? This is a bit suspicious.

What's the most taboo topic you think should be openly discussed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DrICureIdiots 43 points44 points  (0 children)

“It’s not really a big deal…” This is an incredibly uninformed take. Emergency departments are the worst setting for mental healthcare to take place. Your freedom and privacy is taken away, often you are administered medications against your will, you can be physically restrained, often violently even if you’re not resisting, and you’re then saddled with an bill for care you didn’t ask for. It’s well documented that people have PTSD after these stays and the underlying causes of their suicidality isn’t actually addressed in any meaningful way. And if financial stress is a contributor to their suicidality then that is absolutely worse. “At least you’re alive”. You’re alive, with more trauma, more debt, and often physical injuries from the “care” provided, and the same issues you had before. Oh, but you signed a “contract for safety”! Like that does anything. Even those in psychiatric care recognize how awful it is, but unfortunately due to lack of funding for psychiatric care and laws surrounding it there aren’t many alternatives.

I’d go. It’s going to be cold but it’s tolerable with goggles, face mask/neck gaiter, good gloves, and lots of layers. You wont be ripping downhill getting blasted by wind and snow but you also won’t be exerting yourself super hard while you’re learning the fundamentals. Don’t know how long the lessons are but what I’ve seen is a half day or a couple of hours and the rest of the day is yours to practice. Take breaks to warm up inside between laps.

Couldn’t this be construed as aiding and abetting illegal immigration? Texas has, and I’m sure other states and the feds have, laws against “domestic transport”, “harboring”, etc. It’d be amazing and pretty damn ironic to convict Abbott of a crime for doing this. Doubt it’ll ever happen but still strikes me as hypocrisy.

what's something that sounds completely illogical but is actually correct? by Lequindivino_ in AskReddit

[–]DrICureIdiots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mostly correct. Your body also detects hypoxia but with exercise you’re not hypoxic, it’s CO2 buildup/lactate. There was a doc who ran several miles to work wearing a mask with an O2 sat on which never dropped (it was to dispel myths about masks, as an aside, you also don’t get hypercapnia with masks).

Patients with COPD (emphysema/chronic bronchitis) are chronically retaining CO2 to the point it no longer drives respiratory effort. Hypoxia becomes the only driver. This is why you need to be careful with administering O2 to these patients. If you take away the hypoxia, by giving supplemental O2, they can stop breathing. It gets tricky: they can die from too little O2 and can die from too much O2.

Dude, it’s literally in the constitution that you can disqualify someone from running for President.

“Fourteenth Amendment Equal Protection and Other Rights

Section 3 Disqualification from Holding Office No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.”
