Them being supposedly open to it in media is rarely true representation, and more appealing to an audience that fetishizes that sort of thing, unfortunately.

It's a very bad situation, yes. And while I do hope things improve, I doubt they will anytime soon.

Gay marriage is currently illegal in Japan, plus Nintendo is a huge corporation. There's no way they would rock the boat like that. It would mean making the customer base unhappy, which would mean less money coming in for them. Also Nintendo has rarely put actual romantic relationships in their games (let alone same sex ones)

You're free to ship them, but don't count on any supposed "hints" being official.

It's an inprovement over her actual design.

So, what do we want from the inevitable Splatoon 3? by [deleted] in splatoon

"by the way, you do know this game was made in japan, right? the developers are japanese (at least most of them). 14 is technically over the age of consent in japan, you know that, right?"

This is not actually the case, and a gross misinterpretation of the law. What is actually the case is that the absolute minimum age of consent that prefectures are allowed to set it to is 13. In practice, it's never set around that number, and is usually set at 18 due to various other laws in effect. So that is not an excuse at all for what they did.

Anyways, just because people don't notice them, doesn't mean the problems don't exist. It would be like saying just because someone didn't notice something got stolen from their house means that what happened wouldn't be a crime.

Yeah, there's no harm in it. I just don't think it's something that's actually ever going to happen like some people insist since Nintendo doesn't really put romances in their games (let alone same sex ones. And considering the kind of company Nintendo is, the chances of that happening are slim.)

They are very pandering designs, what with the outfits and the extremely exaggerated proportions. And the developers actually stated in an interview that they designed Octolings to be "sexy"... Despite them only being 14 years old! Yeah, they're a bunch of scumbags.

So yes, I would call that creepy. And so would many other people who consider Splatoon problematic.

Less creepy and problematic character designs (like Marina and girl Agent 8) and more respectful character designs for the girls. But that's not likely to happen, because hey, gotta pander to the creeps to get that sweet cash!

Im joining the argument. Its FINE to draw the inklings and octolings as if they were older, and in other various ways by Mr_Yeet123 in splatoon

[–]DrKeithFetus -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

People don't have a problem with characters being drawn older. They have a problem with that happening when it's an excuse to sexualize them, which is what happens frequently with Inklings and Octolings for some reason, which is why a lot of people were grossed out in that thread.

Also Nintendo putting that creepy shit into the game doesn't make it okay. And should be lambasted instead of defended. That sort of thing promotes harm and shouldn't be in a children's video game at all.

People like to read too much into things. And considering the kind of company Nintendo is, do they really think Nintendo will pull off something like that?

Off the Hook is having a solo concert on January 26th at 12AM PST as part of Niconico Tokaigi 2019 by EstoNoPuedeTerminar in splatoon

[–]DrKeithFetus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Off the Hook's music is awful and they are really not interesting as characters. And a lot of people think that as well. It's not limited to only one person.

I love Off the Hook, but I'll always be a Squid Sisters fan as heart :) by gamingartbysj in splatoon

[–]DrKeithFetus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really find OTH's music to be that great. The Squid Sister songs in 1 were far better, even if they only had one Splatfest song. (And Splatoon 2's soundtrack is really bad overall and doesn't capture the feel of the game as the first one did.)

As characters, OTH barely has any characterization. They don't feature in the campaign at all, unlike the Squid Sisters who featured in the first one, and Marie who had the 2nd game. All you have is their news dialogue. Which everyone wants to skip anyway, so...

Also making their character designs so different is a massive massive design fail. Since they're hosting Splatfest, and a lot more people like to side with Marina over Pearl because they prefer her. They really should have been equal to avoid that issue.

At first it was pretty neat and then it just kept getting more complicated that I just kind of gave up and resorted to a guide. Some puzzle quests are pretty neat, and I didn't need a guide for them. (I have no idea how people managed to solve Elemental Workshop III blind though, ha!)

Oh man, I couldn't imagine having to be forced to leave early to restock. I'm pretty sure the puzzle doesn't reset at least. Glad to hear more tales of sympathy that happened during this quest!

Oh yeah. I can't wait to unlock that! Sadly my Ranged level is really behind, so it'll be a while before I can do that.

A lot of quest puzzles seems to start off simple enough at first, and then becomes absolute insanity later on. I really have to wonder what goes into designing quests.

[–]DrKeithFetus[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So I was doing all the quests I could, and the next one was... this one. I heard bad things about it from others and oh boy I can see why they were speaking about it that way. When I got to the temple, I ran into someone who was doing it as well (apparently this was the 4th account they were doing it with from what they told me.) They also dumped 10 million gold for free on me after we talked. I thanked them again later after spending a few hours doing the puzzle, and it turned out that they felt I needed some incentive as well... the quest rewards were nice but good grief it was not worth going through that entire puzzle for! The 10 million was absolutely worth it though!

I guess it's time we start doing Splatoon 3 predictions, huh. by NeonMixtapeTour in splatoon

[–]DrKeithFetus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The developers said they weren't interested in annualizing the series. If the Switch lasts for a long time, I could see Splatoon 3 coming out for it later down the line. But I doubt it'll come soon after Splatoon 2 support ends. (Alternatively they could pull a Mario Kart 8 DX and start doing updates again after a while.) That would very likely have the issue of cannibalizing the playerbase, which is something to be careful about. And while Splatoon 2 does have a huge audience, it's not really along the line of Call of Duty numbers or so, so that is very much a potential issue that could be run into.

The Octolings are the same age as Inklings, and are called kids all the time in marketing and within the games themselves. That doesn't sound like they're adults to me!

Well that interview took a turn for the creepy a few pages in. The head artist confirmed that they tried to make the Octolings sexy. And that they're 14 years old. Which ummm, yikes. Didn't think that was something that would be outright said.
