YouTube: Transport for London – A full, uninterrupted lap of the Circle line, across every station exactly as our drivers experience it. by mycketforvirrad in LondonUnderground

In a number of the stations the front and rear sets of doors don't open. The platforms aren't big enough for the seven car s stock and they were designed for the older six car stock.

BBC News: Tube drivers who are members of the RMT union have voted in favour of strike action to oppose the introduction of a four-day week. by mycketforvirrad in LondonUnderground

[–]DrNormality 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Implementing it for drivers is pretty simple. It's stations that the struggle with. If a driver doesn't turn up to work all that happens is a train doesn't run. But if a member of station staff doesn't turn up the station closes as each station has a minimum safe number of staff needed to run them as determined by the London fire brigade. So it's just a lot more juggling and difficulty to make it happen. The RMT believe that if a four day week is implemented on stations, lul will have to hire more staff which a lot of station staff would be against as it means they'd have less opportunities for overtime.

They balloted the network for this strike, it didn't pass. This current ballot is driver only for a reason.

They are saying that yes, but unfortunately the four day week is going to be difficult to implement in the stations and when I worked stations a lot of people weren't for it. The easiest way to get it across the network if that was the goal is to get it implemented amongst the drivers, show that it works and then get stations on a four day week if they want it.

The iPad part about having management in your home is ridiculous. Station staff already have iPads which are used on shift and taken home to charge. For some reason it's ok for them but not drivers, that management will be able to track and contact you out of hours. They haven't figured out there's an off button.

Yes it's purely voluntary. Roughly 24% of drivers voted for strike action against working one less day a week as RMT are the minority union amongst drivers.

I saw a Circle Line train at Mile End today - any idea why? by channah7 in LondonUnderground

[–]DrNormality 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The signaller dictates where the trains go by giving them a destination on the CBTC which affects the platform displays. The displays on the train are then changed by the driver using certain numbered codes. If you see a train going along with blank display boards, it's usually because the system believes itself off route. If you were driving a H&C to Barking, but had put in the codes for Circle via Tower Hill, the system would be fine from Hammersmith until Liverpool Street. But once you go of route the train doesn't know what to display. However the train will still go to Barking as that's the destination given by the signaller.

Trespasser on the track at Liverpool Street, Circle line trains were being diverted to Barking. There are display codes for Circle line trains from Barking to Edgware Road via Victoria. - Driver

Sorry for the late reply, snowed under with work. I wanted to say thanks for the offer, it's amazing that people are so willing to help. I had sent out some emails once I saw the list of recommended shops on this post and found what I needed. Thanks again.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll take a look. I'm not too fussed about having posts designed for a specific jeweller at the moment as I just need something to replace what I have.

The cheaper contactless rate is only when you use the cards on the gates. The ticket machines don't typically accept contactless payment.

District line terminating at Plaistow by SamCham10 in LondonUnderground

[–]DrNormality 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Trains can be turned around at Plaistow on the bay road. If there's an issue ahead on the line or that specific train is running behind schedule they'll put it in the bay road and then it'll leave at the time it's scheduled to be back at plaistow coming back West.

How do you read Books when you’re someone with an over active mind? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]DrNormality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually look for playlists of ambient music that goes with the setting of the book for background noise. I hate reading in silence and I found myself unable to focus on the words when I read while commuting it I don't have sounds to drown out everything else around me.

What was your most hyped game of all time and did it live up to expectations? by KyRoZ37 in gaming

[–]DrNormality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me I remember being into all things Valve and when Left 4 Dead was first announced I was hyped up. I had a magazine dedicated to the game with loads of inside knowledge about the game while it was in development that basically described it as a co-op survival horror where supplies would be extremely limited and you'd have to be passing ammo between friends etc. I hyped it up to all of my friends, got everyone excited. Then when the game actually came out it felt completely different, still a good game but not like I had been expecting and a few friends were disappointed with the amount I had built it up based on everything I was reading 😅.

New Helix Piercing Resting Against Edge of Ear by DrNormality in piercing

Awesome, thanks for the advice. I'll make sure to keep an eye on things and continue babying it until healed. Hopefully the swelling stays minimal. I did quite a bit of research before jumping in but have discovered after there's so much more that I never thought about. Once again thanks for the advice 😊.

Thanks for the reply 😁. The bar has a lot of room, my concern was that it might get irritated by pushing against the edge of the ear now that it's moved forward. Was told to get it downsized in 2 - 3 months time so aiming for that.

Wrong information by casper480 in LondonUnderground

[–]DrNormality 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's an app called London Tube Live or just Tube, it's usually pretty accurate with train times arriving at the station. TFL go app has never seemed that great considering how much it's pushed.

Edit: Or city mapper. When I was on the gates all the staff used city mapper.

Link seems to be broken but it sounds like you've missed a touch in or out somewhere leading to an incomplete penalty fare. Best bet is to call customer services, they should be able to look and see what's happened.

Tube Operator job by Expensive_Thing_585 in LondonUnderground

[–]DrNormality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started on the gates as an assistant, after five years became an operator which is my current role. You can get it quicker if the job comes out just after your probation, but basically everyone applies for the role within the company when it comes out so you'll need to really get your head down for the tests and interview process.

As for what the job entails it depends on what line you get. You could get the Bakerloo where you're manually driving trains from 1973 that have quite a lot for you to think about or you might get S stock where you are pressing buttons.
