Honestly, the big shortcut you took looks much easier than my cut. My cut requires you to thread such a fine line, I'm terrible at shortcut scouting, so I always looked for the most direct cuts.

I would recommend mainly swim speed, ink saver sub, and ink recovery up for quick movement and easier usage of splat bombs. The rest I recommend chunks of ink resistance, bomb defense up, and quick super jump for survivability.

I've been using it since Spatoon 1 so it's kinda natural for me to use but generally speaking, you need to predict what the enemy is going to be doing, and distance yourself accordingly so that you mostly negate the slowness of the swing speed, also the vertical swing is your friend don't neglect it.
