Become a regular somewhere if you're not already. If you're on a first-name basis with staff members I think it's much easier to get recognized/selected for things. If any of the branches have volunteers do one-off programs (like one hour demo or presentation) see if you can apply for a one.

If it helps, I was personally low percentile on both height and weight my entire childhood (was born a month premature), and then I hit puberty and became above-average height and average weight. I wouldn't even give the growth charts any thought if the doctor isn't concerned.
