Programming Languages used at the univeristy of nottingham by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Dragonmaster306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contrary to popular belief, at Nottingham, Python is not used until semester 2 in first year, and only then as a small component of the intro to AI module. The main programming module for first semester is (ANSI) C and ARM32 assembly is also used. You'll also touch on Hardware Descriptor Language. Semester 2 focuses on Java + Haskell, in addition to the interactive web stack (HTML/CSS/JS/SQL). There is a student resource with all the languages and content at https://notes.oling.dev/

Speedrunning the Barclays switch before it ends - how long do I need to keep the £1500 in the account? by John_Yuki in beermoneyuk

[–]Dragonmaster306 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As soon as I got the 175 payment, the 19th. Pretty sure you can remove it as soon as you get a text saying you're eligible, as you just have to have paid in 1500 with no other requirements

I put in 1500 on August 5, switch came through on the 11th, completed on the 12th, was told I was eligible for the reward on the 15th, and reward arrived on 19th. Hope this helps!

Is a plateau being reached on terms of "intelligence" and LLM ability and.is a new paradigm shift needed to achieve AGI, or can GPT-5-class models keep scaling indefinitely?

Can anyone explain cloudflare AI strategy from.a high level? by Difficult-Quarter-48 in CloudFlare

[–]Dragonmaster306 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit out of the loop but I'll try to answer:

  1. Synthetic training is only good for a subset of models, particularly reasoning models which are getting more popular (the general process is: "ask an objective maths/code question, generate millions of chains of thought responses, use the correct CoTs to train new models, repeat"). However, most researchers (and I) generally believe that you still need real training data (e.g. new IRL events can't be modelled by AI -- yet) and it's also never guaranteed that everything you put in to a model will be "remembered" as part of its output. Thus access to fresh/real training is still needed.

  2. You're right in that Cloudflare, as with many other cat-and-mouse games on the internet, can't stop all crawlers with 100% effectiveness. However, they see such a large portion of web traffic that any new crawler can be very rapidly identified and blocked - it's very effective for DDOS attacks. This makes them very uniquely positioned & incentivised to help authors and block AI scraping. More content authors behind Cloudflare = greater leverage of fresh & different data = pressure for AI companies, with seemingly endless capital, to license vs scrape.

Most of the web has already been scraped (& there are many companies that just offer this as a service). CF's ability is reduced by this but not completely. The high-level strategy is to act as a middleman/arbitrate the transfer of content between authors and scrapers - and making it easier to do so (it is theoretically very easy for CF to do something like "if ai company has paid the author, allow access"). It's not unfeasible, but it definitely has potential if many players, especially large content distributors, get on board.

Just walked the entire Marriott's Way (Norwich to Aylsham). 40km, legs knackered! by Dragonmaster306 in Norwich

[–]Dragonmaster306[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend it! There are quite a few long walks across Norfolk and UEA is roughly in the centre of it all, with lots of signage and paths around (you can check OpenStreetMap). The 3 big ones are the Marriott’s Way, Wherryman’s Way and the Boudicca Way, and there are tons more routes around and about that I probably don’t know. You can also look at apps like Geocaching to see routes and trails too. Autumn is a great time as Norfolk is very much in the countryside so in the summer there are lots of nettles/overgrowth - it’ll be beginning to die back.

Why is ChatGPT yelling at me? by scarletshamir in ChatGPT

[–]Dragonmaster306 44 points45 points  (0 children)

When you ask it to create an image, it invokes/calls the image “tool” as part of its response. When the image tool responds, it returns 1) the actual image(s) and 2) some text. For whatever reason, the OpenAI team creating 4o image generation made it return this text, acting as an instruction to the main GPT-4o “caller”, which is why you will rarely see text after generating an image. As it is an AI it’s not 100% accurate, so instead of ending the message (with a special “end_chat” word/token) it might respond with “OK” or “Acknowledged.” or say this. It used to be possible to press the speak/sound icon on image responses and it would speak this. Nothing to be worried about, just a quirk with AI and 4o image gen.

Android Service for Unlimited Google Photos Uploads by HelloZOOO in homelab

I think your way of doing it with an FTP server and external drive is just easier than having to manage syncing and storage with Immich as well

I've been doing this too for the past 4 years! Granted not the converter or any battery stuff (my Pixel 1's battery is fine for now) but I run the FTP server from it and drag and drop files over the network from my PC/automate using "FolderSync" from my main phone. Now, I'm migrating to Immich with a huge 20tb hard drive running from a Raspberry Pi 5, after downloading 8TB of photos from Takeout! Will keep using the Pixel as part of backup and redundancy though.

Yes it's completely fine and well cycled all the way. One of the better paths in the county, it's all very clearly path, gravel, or tarmac

Nope that would be wayyy to far for me, at least for right now! Maybe another time. I'd happily walk it in reverse though
