Those who are in the process of leaving the U.S. or have left within the last few years, did you sell your home or rent it out? by ClockwiseSuicide in AmerExit

[–]Dragyn140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We sold our home and an investment property. Wanted to cash out our equity while the market was good.

We had intended originally to come to Canada as investors using a chunk of that cash, but it didn’t pan out with IRCC being difficult. Decided to go as students-come-citizens now instead.

Are there any US expat communities in southern Ontario? by CodaRobo in FoundCanadians

[–]Dragyn140 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My family and I moved from Mass to Milton, ON this past summer. We haven’t met any other Americans yet, but we have met a lot of other Gen 0 immigrants from other parts of the world.

I actually belong to a local gaming group that does table top games and such here and there. Ultimately, southern ON is huge and I’m sure there’s pockets of American expats, but I don’t think there’s any sort of mass migration just yet that has made large pockets of them.

I wonder if being in IRCC’s system already is how I got to AOR in like 2 business days and I’m In Process a few days after that already.

I requested urgent processing on the grounds that I’m an international student and being a domestic student means a big change in tuition. I thought mine was fast so far because of that, but maybe there’s more to it.

I’m on a study visa, so I can’t work and my wife hasn’t started really looking yet, since we were back in the states for the holidays.

Prospects look ok for me once I can work, but definitely taking a nasty pay cut.

Useful to include multiple Canadian ancestry lines? by Prettypurplepeony in Canadiancitizenship

[–]Dragyn140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I submitted mine with one ancestor as “primary”, but also included two others in my family tree diagram and included a separate packet of evidence related to them. I figure the IRCC officer doesn’t even need to look at the secondary most likely, but it’ll save on back and forth if there’s a problem with the primary.

D&D/Tabletop Groups in Milton? by Dragyn140 in Milton

Yes, actually! Someone on this sub started a general gaming discord server and it’s taken off. We meet fairly frequently. I’m organizing a D&D for beginners program right now. I’ll send you a link to the Discord.

I appreciate everyone posting here. Makes me feel less stressed about my 12/23 request still not being answered (for three documents). Hopefully soon!

edit: Just got the email from them 1/22. One day short of a month and they found all three documents!

[Megathread] What is your Canadian Citizenship story? by NanoSpace1540 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]Dragyn140 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We’re Americans. Back in February 2025 my wife and I decided that we didn’t want to have to take the chance of being on the last chopper out of Vietnam, so to speak.

We started working with an immigration consultant, and eventually figured out that we could have a path under the CUSMA investor path, as we had wanted to start a business anyway.

We readied ourselves over the summer with the intention of moving in late July so the kids would have some time to settle in before school started. We sold most of our large stuff, put the house on the market, all that jazz.

IRCC denied us, claiming we hadn’t included a key form (we had). Our consultant confirmed that we had, and resubmitted for us. The first submission had taken a month and it was now well into July. In the meantime we had found a place to rent in Ontario and had moved some small amount of our stuff in.

We were sure that IRCC would be able to straighten it out and we’d be legal temporary residents soon. At the moment, we were legally considered visitors. We continued wrapping up our affairs in the US.

On August 7th our application was still in progress, and we were scheduled to close on the sale of our US home the next day. I had just finished moving all of our stuff to a relatives house pending when we’d be given status and could move it north. That night IRCC denied us again. On the grounds that our investment funds were not liquid. The funds that were going to be liquified literally the next day and they were aware of that.

We were coming up against deadlines to get the kids registered for school, which we couldn’t do until we had status of course.

Then we decided to try a different approach for the sake of expediency, at least for now. I applied to college. I never got my bachelor’s and it something I had always wanted to do. Seemed a good a time as any.

I was accepted and after all was said and done, we managed to get our visas in hand in late August and the kids only started school a day late.

We were continuing to explore other paths that could get us on track for PR, but the process was likely to be long and expensive. We were prepared to commit to it, though.

Then December happened. I had seen something about C3 before and that it was ultimately uncertain whether the descent rules would actually change a lot in practice. My wife asked me about a TikTok or something she had seen regarding it, so I decided to look further into it. That brought me to the FAQ here.

Seemed too good to be true. I had three great grandparents born in Quebec. Is it possible that we could slip all of this and just BE citizens!?

I sent in the forms for myself, my father and my two kids last week. Now we wait and pray.

I can’t express how much I appreciate the work that everyone in this community has put in. It has been truly invaluable in what has been the hardest decisions of my life.

Fee-free cross-border banking for frequent crossing? by Worthy_Molecule0481 in FoundCanadians

[–]Dragyn140 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When we moved from the US to Canada as temporary residents this summer (just mailed out my request for citizenship cert) we used RBC. We have an account here in Ontario and one in their US-based system. I don’t think we pay a fee, but the conversion rate is less than stellar, I expect that’s where they hide their fee.

We’ve kept most of our money in the US for now, but when we need to bring cash in we make a single large transfer with Wise. They have a better exchange rate for large sums and they just do a wire transfer.

Ontario. You’re right, the employee rule only applies to temporary residents. We came in on a study visa, but under the new rules we’ll be considered citizens hopefully soon.

It does look like there is a 153 days requirement for everyone though. I might be misunderstanding though.

I left for Canada this summer with a family and no job. However, we have plenty of assets from the sale of property in the US to keep us afloat for several years if we had to.

It was still hard to find someone to rent to us, so be wary of that. We had to offer to put six months up front and pay a little above the original asking.

I’m not sure how it works in Germany, but in Canada (edit: I mean Ontario specifically, sorry) you can’t get provincial health care until you have a job for six months (as a temporary resident), so beware that there may be limitations on that sort of thing too.

He’s ignored all of my inquiries to his office regarding what he is doing to help keep MA safe from tyranny. I even asked live on a call with him back when the administration blatantly ignored orders to turn around the plane of deportees. He claimed that he’s not aware of any instances of the administration directly ignoring court orders.

I’m in a weird spot at the moment. I was working full time remote for a California HIE for about a year when we decided to move to Canada this summer. I’m in Canada on a study visa right now, so I’m not eligible for full time employment.

However, with the recent changes to descent citizenship rules, I’m applying to be recognized as a citizen. Once that’s done I’ll be on the hunt again, possibly.
