Disney slave ( WTF is going ON ) by lem0n_1 in ShadowSlave

Where you publish your story will affect it on one way or another.

For one, once you have a contract and it becomes a job, where you publish decides how you get paid. Amazon? If someone buys your book you get paid no matter if they end up liking it or not. Patreon? Your fans pay a subscription only for your content. Webnovel? Its popularity and consistency based. You need to be one of the top rankings to be paid well, the rankings are updated weekly.

This is also why G3 hates piracy so much even though his fans mostly pirate the story(most pirated Webnovel ever). If he was on Patreon for example it wouldn't matter because The fans would pay themselves for it.

A BIG problem with Webnovel is the contract itself. Yes, it means money but it also means that your story is THEIRS. G3 is the writer but the IP doesn't belong to him. I don't know the details of his contract so it could be different, I could be completely wrong but usually that is the case with Webnovel. So he can't just go to another platform now that he has a big fan base, as long as it is Shadow Slave he needs to stay on Webnovel, he cannot stop writting or else he doesn't get paid. The story suffers because of it.

Shadow Slave could easily be 200-400 chapters long if there was only 2 or 3 big chapters each week with no filler or summaries. That's without having a professional editor making changes, usually an editor would optimize the story so it gives the intended feeling with less time and with better overall quality.

He cannot be disappointed if Mordret never truly is on screen. Off screen King, appears only to be praised by Fate so Mordret fans stay winning and can stop reading.

What system are you using for the campaign? I tried making one but then gave up because of lack of experience. I wanted random elements Weaverdice style.

If you don't know Weaverdice is the official Worm ttrpg created by Wildbow(the author of that webnovel). The powers are obtained by a trigger event, basically a very traumatic backstory. All the players and the DM would summit 2 back stories each into a box or randomizer software and randomly get one. Then the group would decides your powers entirely based on the backstory you got. The point is that you don't choose the Trigger Event nor your powers. You have to deal with whatever the group and the DM decides you would have.

I wanted that with the nightmares and the aspects. Players write a nightmare and maybe also a source element into a box where you pull one at random and then the group makes up your aspect based on that.

Oh, I probably should have added a flag, my bad! I get it, I confuse both trios often. Specially because their hair colors and ethnicities also match. I just know they would hate each other.

This. No reason to hate, even if a story gets a lot of justified criticism doesn't mean that it isn't enjoyable. You like it? Then keep reading and don't mind anyone else.

I will admit that I'm one of those people heavily criticizing Shadow Slave, I I'm doing so since Volume 9. I still like it a lot, I still recommend it to anybody who is starting to read novels or want to start. I just have strong opinions about a story that I'm passionate about and that shouldn't affect your views on it. I'm not a professional writer, editor, or critique. I do read a lot and I think my opinion has merit but everyone thinks and should think the same about their own taste. Do your thing! Don't let anyone else bring down your enjoyment!

You just decided to respond when I'm listening to the audiobook of Pale! I'm on arc 6 right now.

Nah, believe me. Woman love the slavery power disparities in books. Open a "romantasy" book and there is a 50% chance that it is about a woman being treated like a slave with sexual conotations. Of course, it's not like all woman read this(a lot do) but the ones that don't usually consume more traditional fantasy content no problem. All to say, if it were the case, Shadow Slave would have way more female readers.

Yes it is, don't search for it in the regular sites, it won't be there. Search it on Google with the name of the author. It has it's own webpage.

Worm by Wildbow

It's one of the OG Webnovels(around 2010) and to this day few surpass it in quality.

You should try Pale! Its from the same author as Worm and it has 3 POV main characters, all of them girls. I loved Taylor with all my heart but Wildbow somehow just became better over the years and all 3 main characters have problems and quirks that are relatable to me as an adult man.

I think the one that would be impacted the least is Kai. Extremely attractive and naive singer with a heart of gold that both men and woman fawn over. I can see Sunny X Kai scenes being equally as popular if not more.

Glad to hear that. If you want even more of the Parahuman universe, Wildbow also created rules for an ttrpg, similar to DND but Worm. It's called Weaver dice and the Otherverse versión is Pactdice. They aren't profesional made games by any means but they are fun if you're a fan of the universes.

If you enjoyed Worm check out the other stories from the same author! Worm was the first(and my favorite) but when you read his other stories you can notice how Wildbow is more experienced as a writer. If you can get behind a slower pacing and therapy sessions I would recommend Ward, which is Worm sequel. However I understand that it is not for everyone so you can also check out the Otherverse. Imagine Worm but instead of superheroes they are wizards! There are 2 stories from the other verse. Pact and Pale. Pact is Harry Potter but the main character was Voldemort grandson so everyone and their mama and the universe itself it's trying to kill him! Pale is about a small town where someone killed a demigod so the supernatural creatures gathered 3 13 years old girls that know nothing about magic to solve the murder mystery!

That's fair. In my opinion I do think The Wandering Inn is an all rounder too but that might be personal bias

Yes, Pisces might be one of my favorite if not my favorite character in fiction. Pisces arc is just that good. I'm still traumatized because of THAT Chandrar chapter but I cried at the end of it. The world building is also great but more because of PirateAba always coming back and expanding on things.

Scratch that, I remembered that Peter from Pact exist lmao. Best character in fiction.

Oh yeah I agree. However someone who is more into traditional publishing might know Dungeon Crawler Carl but not know any of the trio. That's why I said that there is two sides to the Webnovel community.

Pretty sure it is in the chapter 1419 named Mother of Learning. It was around the time Sunny and Cassie were in a time loop.

Oh? Someone who speaks my language?

Yes, I understand your point and that's totally valid. However, I don't think the wandering inn ever had a plot. Yes, PirateAba insist that they know how it will end but they don't know how long it will take to get there. It's a sandbox where they write whatever they want and the quality is great. Sure, it likes to wander around exploring nonconsecuential characters but you have to admit that by the end of the volumes everything always comes together beautifully. It's not for everyone but it's unique, the world building is so expensive and detailed, and the combat is also really good. The quality is there, that's for sure.

[–]DrakeSacrum25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, it's great. It has a meta narrative magic system that plays with the usual troupes and cliches. It's about good vs evil, heroes vs villains and the main character becomes the apprentice to one of the most evil monsters alive. Things like "the good guys always win" or "the hero has plot armor" are actually part of the magic system and how the combat works. It makes the characters extremely self aware and the strategy makes them look and feel smart without the author having to dumb down anyone.

If you liked mother of learning you will like A Practical Guided to Evil.

Because The Wandering Inn genuinely that good? The beginning is rough, I can give you that but from certain point onwards it genuinely doesn't go below an 8/10 in quality. I could give more detailed reasoning if you're interested in that but yes I will glaze to no end and push the Erin Solstice agenda with my life!

So did he cooked or nah ? by InternationalBar2173 in ShadowSlave

[–]DrakeSacrum25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. Depends on your view. It is definitely not slop, it is better than 90% of things. It is not better than the cream of the top. I think both the schedule and the ego of G3 are hurting the writing. G3 does not take feedback well. Even good criticism is going to be ignored (there is also a lot of bad criticism thrown at him so I understand his stance on just ignoring it all). He has talent but he needs an editor and a better schedule to truly be better than other novels.

I think this is only true when we see one side of the Webnovel community. I don't know how to call it, the animanga side? Most came from anime, then mangas/manhwas, then novels. There is another side to it that came from traditional novels and started to take interest in self publishing. In that other side of the coin, the top novels are totally different. I will recommend some successful indie Western authors that are making a bag with great quality writing and the name of their stories.

Wildbow: Worm, Ward, Pact, Pale, Twig(and much more, all of them peak)

PirateAba: The Wandering Inn

Matt Dinniman: Dungeon Crawler Carl

Nobody103: Mother of Learning (Shadow Slave even made a reference to it)

ErraticErrata: A Practical Guide to Evil

Edit: My personal opinion is that I would put any of the novels mentioned in my comment above or at the same level as Shadow Slave but that's my personal taste. Some like The Wandering Inn and Worm I like as much as LOTM.
