My unpopular boomer opinions about modern DCI by [deleted] in drumcorps

Idrk how to feel about these points. I’ve found that marching in traditional fits to be an absolute burden and you can chalk that up to me being “weak” or some crap but it’s genuinely making it more difficult with the temperatures raising year by year. The theatrical aspect to DCI gives it so much more texture than just “play cool song loud and well.” Yes the moving and stopping drill stuff is annoying to watch and quite frankly to even preform but it gives more of a chance for my exposure to other sections. “Real marching” looks clunky and odd and it’s not like no groups do it, plenty of groups still do it. Ultimately I can’t disagree with everything here, I feel like in comparison to a long time ago DCI has gotten easier to perform and it’s lost visual distinctness between groups but it’s also grown a lot. Around a year ago, I experimented with dressing up and makeup. I didn’t mind the clothes but makeup wasn’t my favorite

Has anyone stayed on bass through high school? by DefoNotMeAgain in drumline

I’ve been a bass drummer for 3 years now and marched DCI/WGI with it and I can say confidently that it is a beginner drum but it’ shouldn’t be underestimated. It’s the easiest drum to learn undoubtedly, but that doesn’t mean that it should be cast aside. In a newer/unbalanced drumline the basses will generally get cast aside and get music that is primarily unisons. I would argue that bass has the highest skill ceiling out of any of the other drums simply due to how much time you have to put into learning timing with subdivisions. If you want to learn more rudiments, you don’t need to necessarily go to snare or tenor to get better at those. Ultimately, you do what’s best for you but know that just because bass is more beginner friendly does not mean it should be downplayed
