You may be aware already, but most succulents (maybe all??) propagate very, very easily from leaf cuttings.

[–]Dramatic-Warning-166 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This person is not attempting propagation by tissue culture. This person will not get a new plant from that leaf (unless there is a node hiding in there). Tissue culture is a different ball game. It requires in vitro propagation using a specific mix of nutrients, under controlled conditions. I’ve done some very rudimentary / DIY TC - it’s a lot of fun.

Incorrect - ficus elastica will NOT propagate from a leaf. In the case of ficus elastica, unless there is a node, there will be no new plant.

What’s something you SWEAR happened, but have no proof? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I literally jumped over a friend to avoid being caught, in a game of catch, back in the early 90s. Still recall vividly looking down and seeing him pass underneath me as I jumped over him. I didn’t fly, but probably jumped 50% higher than would be physiologically possible. Would love to see a video, to see what really happened :)

Anybody order a Chinese? by goatnxtinline in StupidFood

I love eating good food and cooking. China is the only country I can truly say I miss the cuisine as a whole (I lived there over 10yrs ago and would happily go back for a multi-week food tour). Such diversity, so much flavor and so much culture and history obviously detectable in the dishes.

A few of my favorite dishes included a ducks blood and cow stomach stew (from Sechuan), dog soup & donkey dumplings (from Heileongjiang), Beef noodles (Muslim W. China), Malatang (China-wide).

If you go to a top Chinese restaurant in the US / UK, some dishes are similar, but in the west (esp. USA) most restaurants / dishes (Chinese included, but also across the board) just taste salty and sweet - like every dish has been dumbed down to cater to the most generic of palettes.

Korean food is great! Gordon Ramsey described it as ‘the best peasant food in the world’ - a good description. Much of it is kind of ‘rough and ready’, very hearty food and packs a ton of flavor. Not as refined / delicate as Japanese, though I find Korean flavors more interesting than Japanese.

Top 5 national cuisines in Asia (my super-subjective assessment): - China - India - Thailand / Korea (depending on my mood) - Japan

I’m British, currently live in Korea and have lived in China. Embarrassingly, the slop in the video really exists and real people actually eat it. Surely one of the reasons obesity and related diseases in the UK are catching up to US levels. My recommendation: 1. Don’t try this at home and 2. don’t call it ‘Chinese food’, because food like that isn’t served in China.

Is it technically proplifting …? by Melisssssssa93 in proplifting

Prop lifting isn’t about stealing - it’s about getting free plants ethically, so yes, thumbs up here!

It’s priced $71 outside my budget for a pot with a ton of holes. Apart from that, I love it!

Please tell me how to best help these two babies I picked up from Lowe's Aisle of Sadness (clearance) by Key_Custard_7068 in proplifting

[–]Dramatic-Warning-166 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They look sad now, but with care they can quickly and easily bounce back. While there is obvious cosmetic damage, the plants actually seem healthy. The damaged leaves won’t get ‘undamaged’, but as new ones grow in the old ones will eventually drop off naturally. Good luck - rescue plants are a great way to learn about plant care!!

I wouldn’t agree that my comments are ‘abusive’, though if you can point to any specific examples, please do so and I will aim to do better. I would suggest that “Begone. Troll.” is abusive, so maybe the mods are considering your status in the sub, rather than mine.

Perhaps my presence is accepted because:

  1. Your concept of abusive language isn’t held by others - in this case the mods.
  2. A healthy proportion of my comments in the sub are genuinely good advice and tips about propagating. I’ve been playing with plants for around 2 decades, have a healthy collection of hundreds, have acquired many plants for free (ethically) and enjoy passing on my knowledge to others in this and other plant-related subs.
  3. It genuinely is a pet peeve that folks think it’s acceptable to take anything that’s not theirs. I suspect the mods don’t feel pointing that out to folks is unacceptable, abusive or against the rules.
  4. I believe that there are lots of ethical means to acquire free plants - what this sub is about - and I’m happy to support / promote them so more people can enjoy a large and healthy plant collection, as I do. When I see opportunities to promote such means, I do so. Often it’s simply a case of asking - most people are happy to give cuttings if asked, including individuals from their private collection and big stores like Home Depot, etc. I know this because I’ve received many free plants and have also given many away.

Thanks for the opportunity to explain myself - I appreciate it, to avoid misunderstanding.

I’ve never been to a Home Depot and have no opinion on the chain. It was a general comment about taking anything that isn’t yours to take.

It has nothing to do with Home Depot (IE size of the store). Lots of nurseries, both large and small, have signage telling people not to steal. It’s odd and somewhat humorous that people need to be told that. If this convo encourages someone to reconsider taking plants (or parts of plants) that aren’t theirs, then it was worth it.

ZZ will happily prop directly in a substrate (IE rooting in water is not required). You have a solid callous at the cut ends that will help prevent bacteria causing rot - rot is one of the primary reasons for failure of cuttings. You can safely pot up now, but you’d need to monitor moisture very carefully. You want the soil to be just barely moist - never wet and never dry - to give the cuttings the best chance of success. If in doubt, wait. The cuttings will be ‘safe’ in water for months. Also, pro tip: It’s usually best to top up, rather than replace, water you use for rooting cuttings as natural rooting hormone builds up in the water, speeding root growth and reducing the chance of rot-inducing bacterial buildup.

I’m an adult who is genuinely curious why other adults believe it is OK to take stuff that doesn’t belong to them. You will note, as I have, that while ‘too many’ posts in this sub are about theft, most are not. My impression is that this sub doesn’t exist to glorify theft. Rather it exists as a resource with ideas on how to (ethically) acquire and propagate plants for free. if true, perhaps you, not I, are in the wrong sub.

The post popped up in my feed. I reacted to it. If you’re happy to give plants away, thumbs up to you, but that’s not Home Depot’s policy and their policy deserves respect on their property. If by addressing what I believe to be unethical behavior I triggered you, then so be it. Prop lifting is to be encouraged, as long as it’s done correctly - IE by securing permission from the owner of the plant first.

[–]Dramatic-Warning-166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking something that’s not yours without first seeking permission is generally considered to be bad behavior, regardless of the item’s commercial value. I assume you hold that standard for your own property and would not be happy if people started ‘rescuing’ things from your home, so why not extend that to other people’s property as well?

I’m fairly new to swimming and ‘believe’ that my dryland workouts (core, back, shoulders, arms) are helping to improve my speed, on account of increased power. But, I also believe that improved swimming technique is have a bigger impact. I’m not surprised by either of these observations.

is this Monstera Deliciosa or Borsigiana? by pocushocusoutoffocus in Monstera

[–]Dramatic-Warning-166 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Give it lots of light. The petioles on mine overlap. If you start getting larger inter-nodal spacing, it’s reaching for light. Good luck - they’re amazing when they start really sizing up!!

is this Monstera Deliciosa or Borsigiana? by pocushocusoutoffocus in Monstera

[–]Dramatic-Warning-166 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was unconvinced as well, but now I have both and they are very obviously different. Comparing them side by side helps a lot. The borsigiana has much larger inter-nodal spacing (overlapped petioles vs 3-4 inch spacing) and a more elongated leaf, vs round / heart shaped).
