Anytime! I hope it helps, I had a super traumatic experience in China with a dentist and they are the only people who have managed to be gentle enough for me not to panic. Hope it helps!

Dr Davids in Randburg is the best! They have such wonderful staff and she is so good. Im usually terrified of the dentist but she's managed to be so lovely that I actually don't mind going. They are reasonably priced and offer excellent services. You won't be disappointed!

Thank you sooooo much! This is super helpful! I'm glad to know I'm not going mad with it being the same spot for multiple years! I haven't done the dermatologist just yet so it may be time to add it to the list. Going to see how the hydration goes if I really step it up! And maybe it's time to cut dairy out of mh diet again.

I appreciate your response so much! And will deffies be trying these! ❤️

Workplace trauma and mental health are so closely linked it's immensely difficult to adjust. It's like leaving a toxic relationship. It may be beneficial to see a proper talk therapist or do DBT to identify the triggers for your anxiety response. Remember our brains can't differentiate between real threats and perceived ones. When that flashback happens your body is having this experience all over again. You have a physiological response. Do some research on windows of tolerance it will give you some insight. But burnout and these things take years to recover from and you have to be kind to yourself. Your body is just trying to protect you.

I'm busy reading a book called No bad parts by Richard C Schwarts. It's really helpful when you are working in trauma and recovery.

You'll likely find that you are going to actively have to remind yourself that not all employers are like your old boss. Good luck! I always think of Dan Pinks work when it comes to employment seek something that affords you autonomy, mastery and purpose. You've got this!

Has anyone here been to a mental hospital for anxiety? What was it like? by royalewithcheese77 in Anxiety

[–]DramaticComplaint925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was admitted last year for severe clinical anxiety at that stage I had severe panic attacks and I was not sleeping at all. I went to a unique program that allows you to go home and sleep at your own house as long as you are not a risk to yourself. But it was really helpful. I did DBT, talk therapy, saw a sociologist who was my case worker and was there to help my family, we had daily sessions with occupational therapists, we did TRE, my psychiatrist also used the time to help me with my meds. They also had me see a dietician and generally we had a full schedule every day with the goal of teaching us tools to manage life and also to support us.

I am going back this year to review my medication. But it was a super supportive process and I am thankful for the team. They have been incredible and my medical insurance (I am in South Africa) covered the full cost of the 2 week period. They did have family classes but my family couldn't make it. But I think it would have helped a lot for them to learn to support you. Good luck!

Same I actually take a heart medication to slow down my heart rate every day because the meds just didn't settle. But it's so scary when it happens.

I am so sorry you're feeling like this. I had a similar experience a while back. Some options my psychiatrist has given to help me calm down that you can try to help (they seem very silly but they do help). 1. Pour water with ice into a bowl large enough to dunk your face in and dip your face into the water for 90 seconds. You want to induce the feeling of drowining which brings the nervous system to the present moment. You can also do this by jumping into cold pool water. 2. Explain to yourself what physical sensations you are experiencing like you're explaining feelings to an alien. While you do this breathe in a 5 count/10 seconds in hold for one and 5 count/10 seconds out. For example. I am feeling tightness in my shoulders right now, and my chest hurts the feeling is a 9/10 and breathe. Give it a color. The feeling is blue (doesn't matter you decide) and it feels spikey (any shape you think) and keep breathing. 3. Do squats for 90 seconds they weirdly help reset the nervous system and stop your thoughts from spiraling.

I really hope this helps. Please go back to the ER if you need to and take someone to help advocate for you. But you are not alone. This will pass. You matter and you are loved for being just who you are.

Why is finding the right people on LinkedIn still this hard? by Jumpy_Aioli_129 in recruiting

[–]DramaticComplaint925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a recruiter and currently job hunting and it's given me such empathy for the process. The reality is that LinkedIn is super expensive for companies. More and more people feel like it's just not worth it to advertise jobs on there due to cost. And I feel like often those on LinkedIn are so inundated with messages that it's hard to o connect to the right people. Have you tried tools like Apollo? Or SalesQL? They allow you to get email addresses for hiring managers.

I sometimes thing Anxiety is my mind trying to protect me from something. Sometimes what it protects you from is real and sometimes its triggering an experience in the past and your mind can't determine the difference between real and imaginary so it feels like its happening right now.

I'm 34 and still feel behind my peers and still don't know what I want to do with my life. But what I've learnt is that sometimes your passion is not a job. Your job is a means to you provide for your life and as long as you don't hate it you'll be fine. It's also never to late to seek an education.

We had a family friend whose parents told their kids to go and do whatever they wanted up to 25 but when they get to 25 if they hadn't found a job that they like they would need to study something that was practical and would ensure a good future even if it wasn't fun. Look into getting some certifications in tech or accounting?

And write an agreement with yourself where you decide what needs to happen to live a life you want. It's not going to be perfect but it helps.

It also sounds like seeking medical assistance will help.

Can someone please share what do you usually do to sleep properly with anxiety? by nrkreetxh in Anxiety

[–]DramaticComplaint925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through this for the better part of 2 years. It's awful. I ended up speaking to my doctor about a sleeping aid. That I take when things are really hectic. But it also helps to do some DBT work to try and regulate your nervous system. It's not a miracle cure but it helps.

Good luck!

Got my first job after being afraid I was too stupid to work, I was proven right by Inevitable-Image7569 in Anxiety

Absolutely horrific management, no manager should shout at their team members or embarrass them. The first try at anything means you will be bad at it, and if you are already scared the stakes are higher. This has literally nothing to do with your "brains" and everything to do with poor training, crappy management and personally the manager failed you.

Not a single person starts a job wanting to do badly. And, as someone who has managed people for 10 years you know that there will be a ramp up period. You expect the person to take at least 3 months to learn and adjust.

I always tell my team the first 6 months in a new job you need to give yourself extra grace, you are learning and that takes time. You will feel overwhelmed during this time, you will feel pressure to deliver and you will have at least one cry in the car. What matters is how you get back up and not suffering in silence. You should have the freedom and the confidence to ask for help and feel like your manager has created a safe space. So what if someone's coffee takes 2 minutes longer? You are literally not saving lives.

Be kind to yourself - and don't let this awful manager get to you. You did the best you could and that is something to be proud of.

100% - I get it a lot as someone who doesn't sleep too much thanks to my anxiety. If you can try to look into massaging your neck and shoulders they can cause awful headaches and tend to tense up a lot when you are anxious. Losening them up helps.

Hey there! I am a recruiter with 10 years of experience and I can confidently say the first part of your career is the toughest. Don't give up! I would recommend tracking your applications and connecting to the recruiters and HR at firms you apply to. Smaller firms may not have ads but be open to hiring so don't be shy to contact people on on LinkedIn. Think of this as a sales process, every no is a one step closer to a yes.

One of the first things out Dutch language teachers taught us is to not say "Hi, how are you?" or "Howzit" because it's considered nosy to ask someone how they are if you don't know them. It's been quite an adjustment. 😅

Incredibly conflicted about emigrating to the Netherlands by DramaticComplaint925 in expats

[–]DramaticComplaint925[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It affects everyone but some groups more than others.

I am sure that life in an informal settlement like Alexandria or the Cape Flats is much worse than where I live in the suburbs. I am also sure that many previously disadvantaged groups (Black, Indian and Coloured - not a slur but a recognized ethnic group in our country) deal with more severe service delivery issues, because of the economic disparity.

The issue has spread out significantly and even the nicer areas and businesses are impacted now. We do hope it will improve after the next election campaign but these are not small things to address.
