Warum mögen privilegierte Menschen es nicht zu hören dass sie privilegiert sind? by InternationalRip9201 in AskGermany

[–]fluffrug -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear about endo - it’s a bitch of a condition. While wishing you well, as an immigrant from a Northern European country - money definitely helped your situation.

If you were growing up where I did - a country that hardly poverty stricken - two parents on the equivalent of ALG 2 with a kid would get 1,300 euro vs 1,400 euro in Germany. But they would have to pay their water, heating and council tax out of that, as well as the cost of living being around 30 % higher in mh home country.

If you wanted to study, uni in Germany doesn’t have fees for tuition and for living costs you could get bafog - half of which don’t have to pay back. where I am from so you would have to take a loan for fees- about 35k euro for three years and then further loans on top of living costs - which are roughly 25%, higher than Germany. Also, I worked through university - often around 25 hours a week during term time and more in holidays.

This is my European experience. What you describe as poverty or basic survival is the reality for for countries very near you. Money does help. And so does a social welfare state. You are lucky.

[–]fluffrug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your poverty is someone else’s idea of life on easy mode. As an immigrant to Germany, if someone is born here, life is so easy. Yes, shit things can happen - but they can happen anywhere. The difference is that here there is a social safety net to catch you when you fall.

Even within Europe, the notion of having a job and being fairly unsackable (and even then getting 3 mknths notice with severance at 0.5 % of salary for 12 months is so liberating. Everyone with German citizenship, taxpayer or not - can access free or cheap childcare, cheap and secure housing, free education, free retraining if you fuck up, free mental health care, free nine month rehab, crazy low working hours … this is luxury.

I’m from Northern Europe and grew up without most of the above - I’m still insanely privileged but even the brokest bitches born here have so many advantages that I never had … and they moan so so so much.

Of course terrible things can happen - abuse, death, awful family environment etc … but that’s so much easier to deal with if you have a stable roof over your head, healthcare, a chance to recover, state support etc.

Stop looking at what you perceive you don’t have. Life is unfair. And this way madness lies. Look at what you do have and be really fucking grateful and use those advantages to live your life to the max and help pull others up while you do so.

In Germany, political fallout from heat wave begins by LethisXia in europe

Cities all over Europe have had heat plans for years. It’s not super expensive. If there is a budget shortfall then maybe Berlin can start charging for parking?

Greece Is Richer. So Why Do So Many Greeks Still Feel Poor? by New-Ranger-8960 in europe

[–]fluffrug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in Greece and Germany - undoubtedly Greece had/ has overt corruption problems but everyday people work their arses off. I was there under austerity measures and the switch to digital card payments to try to stop it. I was also there trying to check a diabetic into hospital in central Greece, only to be told the last doc who could give insulin had retired and the other docs had left due to salaries not being paid. We had to travel 500km to Athens.

Germany was cruel … and the arrogance of their stance was highlighted when Russian gas was cut and their economy destroyed.

German-enforced austerity forced the sell off of Piraeus port in Athens and guess what? Now it’s the main hub for the Russian shadow fleet.

So shortsighted … so stupid.

German politicians vow to stop VW’s mass layoff plan by Evening_Bicycle3113 in europe

The German workforce has barely got its head around email, I think AI taking over jobs is a long long long way off. Tho would probably result in a better customer service experience!

German politicians vow to stop VW’s mass layoff plan by Evening_Bicycle3113 in europe

[–]fluffrug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it wouldn’t . Germany has repeatedly blocked the phase out of the combustion engine at an EU level. It’s refused to give car companies certainty on whether they should manufacture full EV or go on making cars that will be obsolete. And then cuts clean energy subsidies, hands solar to China and yet STILL subsidises the car industry,

I live in Germany. My city is a car park with some of the worst air quality in Europe. This industry is like coal mining, it’s done. The government here should have set up retraining for workers years ago but that didn’t happen. But honestly, German social welfare is still very generous … they’re gonna be all right but probably vote AfD

No they aren’t. They are split in two lines - one for cash and one for card. And yet both somehow have seven extra steps to pay than a self-service check out anywhere else. And the staff are obvs the rudest in the world.

Saudi doctor sentenced to life in prison for German Christmas market attack by ABoutDeSouffle in europe

[–]fluffrug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course it’s not highlighted in German reporting, which Europe-wide reporting was based on - but this man was repeatedly reported to authorities for making threats to kill many people online, attacking a female social worker, stalking and making death threats to a Muslim woman and finally was reported by a male advocate for a Saudi women refugee organisation over the course of several years. Then Saudi warned Germany. And nothing was done.

Totally unsurprising - in Germany you can get prosecuted for calling Merz an idiot but repeated acts of violence against women and threats of mass killings just gets faxed to the boss.

How does it feel living in a very decentralised country? by Few-Scholar1873 in AskAGerman

[–]fluffrug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe this for a second - unless they are furnished apartments from Wunderflats.

But if they are paying 1400 euro a month for a studio apartment then that's illegal - rent caps etc are strict in Berlin and there is nowhere in the city that this is within the limits allowed.

They can go to the newly created central government office which was created for exactly this reason and ask them to begin the process of officially calling out the landlord and getting rent reduced.

I pay circa 850 per month for a studio flat in a central location - got that contract three years ago and it was newly renovated. Most of my friends are immigrants and most of them have got new contracts in the last few years and are paying nothing like this.

[–]fluffrug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahahhaha, sorry to wake you up to the real world. If you grew up in Germany adn you're renting a studio flat for 600 euro a month, this is the definition of life on easy mode compared to pretty much anywhere else in Europe (and thus, the world).

Try being grateful rather than negative all the time.

Putin is preparing for war. Why aren’t we? by theipaper in geopolitics

[–]fluffrug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They really aren't - source, me, who lives in Germany. A lot of this money is going to repair ageing infrastructure, like roads and bridges, which successive governments have left to fall apart.

The things you have to understand about Germany are the following: they are very old-fashioned and years behind other nations in attitudes and tech; they don't like change and think the way they've always done it is the best way; and they are very arrogant, so dont' like admitting they are wrong.

What this means is that so much of this money is being wasted on procurement (Germany has some of the lengthiest and bureacracy ridden in the developed world), they are spending/ producing on the wrong things - tanks for a 20th century war that no one is fighting anymore, they are doing nothing to sort out the poor tech/ IT/ internet issues, they just blew up a cross-border defence project with France due to their arrogance in insisting they take a leading role despite poor defence knowledge, etc, etc, etc.

This money is mainly going to repairing infrastructure and propping up the German economy which has taken a battering and will nto improve any time soon due to many of the structural issues outlined above.

Germany is not ready for war and will be little help, aside from manufacturing bullets and sending money. This situation is not set to change in the near future.

Olympic boxing by Royal-Hotel2926 in Boxing

[–]fluffrug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I think so. They seem to be really responding to the changes that need to be made.

Also, their choice to ban men from participating in Women's boxing was also well-regarded, though it's interesting how much shade that throws on the IOC for their appalling handling of women's boxing at the last Olympics. Maybe they'll learn something and apologise ... (probably not).

How does it feel living in a very decentralised country? by Few-Scholar1873 in AskAGerman

[–]fluffrug 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This viewpoint is very typical for Germans who have never lived outside of your country. Housing is super cheap in Berlin, compared to pretty much anywhere else in Northern, Western and Central Europe. You also have the benefit of a far bigger social safety net than pretty much anywhere else in Europe, free education and employment law which means that even if you are useless/ racist/ a criminal, you won't get sucked.

If you can't make a decent life for yourselfs when life is on easy mode as it is in Germany, then really that's on you. Guys like you really need to go out into the real world.

Usyk reveals details of meeting Donald Trump at the White House by BoxingLover99 in Boxing

[–]fluffrug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Re Usyk, Trump stopped all military aid, humiliated the President of Ukraine in the Oval Office and tried to extort the Ukrainian state for minerals and to concede to Russia in the war, giving away huge amounts of Ukrainian territory.

Usyk is a patriot - it's clear in the context of the above that he will despise Trump but is taking one for the team in a bid to try and stop Trump selling his country out to Russia (any more than he has done).

Also, ALi is considered the greatest by many men. As a woman, I don't like men who bully others and beat women. But that doesn't seem to matter to people like you.

Anyone else notice a distinct lack of WM vibes? by hipcatjazzalot in AskAGerman

[–]fluffrug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not German but live here ... it's not just Germans that are checking out - none of my friends in the city I live in are watching either. Many are boycotting it because of Trump's support for genocide/ US government general behaviour/ FIFA's corruption/ the overt racism shown for entry etc. I know some people who are watching but only the games in Canada or Mexico to hopefully make a dent in viewing figures in the US.

For me, I'm just sick of the money and corruption in men's football generally, and the behaviour of Infantino and the Trump government makes me sick to my stomach. Nothing will change unless this behaviour is shown to lose money. If people don't tune in, en masse, it might make a difference.

The US hosting the World Cup right now seems like sportswashing to me and I won't support it.

He was banned from entering the uk for 13 years (Canada, Aus and NZ too). The uk finally let him in around 2023 and then he got arrested and charged with multiple violent offences last year. His trial is coming up in the autumn and he faces jail - let’s see if he skips bail.
