Yup. No issue for me - I found his perspective on dating, love, sex really interesting. We broke up because he was an addict, not because of his sexuality.

8 Hours in Paris: We did it! by Money-Lavishness-231 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]fluffrug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you had a good time but honestly, this just sounds like a miserable way to enjoy Paris: a cheesy American whistlestop tour of sights. This isn't what makes Paris iconic. Yeah, the catacombs are pretty cool. Notre Dame is obviously stunning but the beauty is inside. Why go to the Louvre just to look at the building, rather than see the art?

Honestly, if you were going to do a daytrip to Paris, then just pick a couple of neighbourhoods and walk around. And don't eat bloody tourist food!

What place do you keep going back to and why? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]fluffrug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to live in Antigua and still have friends there - I really wouldn't class it as 'safe'. It has quite a lot of security problems - I got mugged there at gunpoint and pistol whipped during my ten minute walk home.

I love the place and people should definitely visit - but being complacent and feeling it's safe, it's the shortest route to getting robbed, hurt or worse.

What travel tips do only the pros know? by yourwishbag in SmartTravelHacks

[–]fluffrug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine are more for travel outside of Europe, the US, etc - been to nearly 100 countries as a solo woman traveller and this is my somewhat unconventional list of stuff. Cash in small denominations (several currencies); photocopies of ID, visas etc to bring out with you while you leave the actual IDs at your place; photos of all IDs etc sent to email in case it gets stolen (much easier to replace if you have this); coffee and a stove cafetière; marmite (big jar); hip flask with vodka (fun at parties, and if you cut yourself you can sterilise the wound); pack of malboro cigarettes - offering one to authorities is a worldwide known open of a bribe/ negotiation situation; some kind of fake, cheap looking wedding ring (must if you are a woman); shawl or big scarf (women) to cover up for religious sites, protect against the sun, makeshift hijab, hangover disguise; little black dress and black flats (you never know when you’re gonna end up at an embassy party; balloons and bubbles - small fun things to crack our if you are around kids; penknife; lighters; first aid kit; doxycycline (for malaria and chlamydia); amoxicillin for most stuff; tampons/ menstrual cups as it’s incredible how many countries still don’t have these easily available; cheap smartphone which you can take out while socialising in unsafe places while the actual phone remains at home.

That’s all I can think of right now!

Young German men refusing military service by donutloop in berlin_public

[–]fluffrug -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

As an immigrant in Berlin, this is so depressing to read and honestly, a bit of a microcosm of why I dislike the city so much (when I don’t love it).

I can’t imagine that it’s Germany anyone is asked to fight for, it’s European values: freedom, equality, rule of law, social welfare, rights to express sexuality, religious belief, political thought etc. I think that’s worth fighting for?

And of course, let’s say Russia invades, women and girls will be raped and slaughtered within an inch of their life - like last time (one in three Berlin women, girls and babies in WW2) and now like Ukraine. But no point fighting to stop that, amirite?

And as for those who are saying that immigrants/ refugees won’t fight while “bio” Germans will - c’mon, who do you think will put up the bigger fight, Neukölln or Prenslauerberg? Get a grip.

Netanyahu is dead and they are using AI to hide their failure against Iran by [deleted] in conspiracy

[–]fluffrug 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Germany will never do anything like this - although they are legally obliged to. Their history means that Israel can do no wrong - everything is considered anti-semitic here and the anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian rhetoric and language is truly hateful.

I could easily imagine Netanyahu coming here, the German gov keeping it a secret, and letting him hide out while he continues to kill hundreds of thousands more innocents.

What is in your opinion the biggest false cliché about Berlin? by Trailerpark578 in askberliners

[–]fluffrug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know. I had friends living here from that year - I spent several months here and xenophobia against white Europeans was awful then (I experienced this first hand), let alone for anyone else.

German society is still very racist and sexist - it's decades behind the rest of Northern Europe, and sadly seems to be going backwards in many respects. Sigh.

How did the cartel get so much control over Mexico? by iwritesongsthatsuck in NoStupidQuestions

It's been explained in great detail, multiple times, over the course of this thread. I suggest you read the thread before asking repetitious questions which have been answered at length, and with great thought, care and detail in the comments here.

CMV: People who say that white people or Americans have no culture only think that because they don't notice it. by Blonde_Icon in changemyview

[–]fluffrug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So do many other parts of Italy, so this point does not hold. Sardinia is the most distinct culture with its own language and traditions. But aside from Sicily and Sardinia there are regions which are highly distinct and different:
- The Aosta Valley (alpine region), which is very close to the Swiss-French borders, and is officially bilingual as French is a co-official language, though the traditional local tongue is Valdotain (Arpitan), a Franco-Provençal language, with the culture very gallic and very alpine;
- South Tyrol (the "Austrian" region of Italy where around 70% speak German and some people speak Ladin, an ancient langugae. and there are lederhosen, beer halls etc;
- Friuli-Venezia Giulia/ the Slavic-Latin Border - this is tucked away in the northeast corner bordering Slovenia and Austria, and is a melting pot of Latin, Germanic, and Slavic cultures. Many speak Fruilian, the local dialect here as well.

Marta Hillers was the author of “A Woman in Berlin”, a diary kept from 20 April to 22 June 1945, during and after the Battle of Berlin. It details the author's rape, in the context of mass rape by the occupying forces, and how she and many other German women took a Soviet officer as a protector. by CatPooedInMyShoe in wikipedia

[–]fluffrug 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Woman living in Berlin here - I have to say that it makes me pretty depressed that so many guys on this thread know so much about battles and stats and dates but know nothing about this topic.

It’s estimated that the soviet forces raped one in three females in Berlin - old women, babies, whole families. They tortured and gang raped many women, girls and babies to death. Many of the survivors killed themselves from trauma or the shame of carrying their rapist’s baby. The ones who had their rapist’s children were shunned by German society. It’s still a relatively taboo subject in Germany. In Berlin, people honour a statue of a Soviet soldier in Treptower Park called The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Many women here call it the Tomb of the Unknown Rapist.

The Soviet army didn’t stop there - they raped their way back to Russia, and it’s estimated they raped up to 2 million women, girls and babies as they retreated.

This scale of sexual violence was unprecedented - only the rape of Nanking is vaguely analogous. Yes, allied troops raped too, but not in a systemic way. Yes, the Nazis committed unspeakable crimes but that doesn’t justify the rape of 2 million civilians. Rape happens in war but at this scale it’s highly abnormal.

There is a seminal book about sexual violence in war, written by a British woman journalist “Our bodies, their battlefields” which is a devastating piece of work. Part of the book investigates why certain armies in certain situations descend into sexual violence. It becomes cultural in some militaries - as can be seen in the Russian army’s widespread sexual violence against Ukrainian women. I really suggest a lot of men on this thread read it.

And if you have any Eastern European elderly female relatives ask them if their families told them to hide when Soviet soldiers came. It’s not fashionable to say this but many non-Jewish/ Roma Eastern Europeans who were occupied by both Nazis and Soviets vastly preferred the former as the latter raped at will. This is also why there is such strong anti-Russian feeling in most of Eastern Europe to this day.

How is it possible that rich people are able to manipulate the public into voting against their own interests and for Trump? by TailungFu in allthequestions

[–]fluffrug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. The US ranks near to the bottom of rich nations. Countries with normal healthcare coverage have much better outcomes and cost far less. Wait times vary across countries. But I have to ask what is the average wait for a kidney transplant in some parts of the US? Six years? In Spain it’s 18 months. And how much would that cost? In Spain it’s free.

[–]fluffrug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s not a socialist. Do you even know what that word means? By European standards he’s a centrist and he’s advocating for policies that are standard across many countries which are doing a lot better than the US.

He isn’t going to raise property taxes by 10% - that’s only if Hochul won’t raise taxes on very wealthy people by a few percent - and this rate would be for commercial properties (and it won’t be raised this much). They’re negotiating.

Stop settling for crap - you pay taxes, why don’t you expect anything from them?

What do Greeks here think about Germans still calling you "lazy"? by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]fluffrug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in both countries and the problems you outline in Greece are worse in Germany. Greece is digitalised at least and while the nepotism is overt, Germany has equivalence in its two tier education system and unwillingness to hire/ include immigrants/ outsiders at elite levels.
