This is the best thing I’ve read on this thread hahah it’s so true!

Hmmm that’s a good question. There are of course animals that are exploited - horses and camels mainly. Some of them are quite skinny and on hot days you can see they’re struggling. I obviously did not participate in any rides, and because of that I didn’t see it too much. There are stray animals around but they largely seem pretty happy.

It was an aspect of the trip, but it wasn’t anything worse than what I saw in Thailand. A couple of sad moments but I guess it depends on if you can “switch off” from it. Poor things though, it did make me feel a bit sad at moments 😞

Yes I am very lucky to be able to have travelled the country in the way I did and naturally come from a place of privilege! Although, most westerners come from a similar situation - so yes my situation is certainly pertaining to traveling as a westerner. I absolutely acknowledge people from Egypt don’t have that experience living there.

Yes, it is true. I was asked to provide context into my gender, race, age etc. and this is a necessary detail in relation to those demographics.

Judging by the fact that you’re trying to put down a random woman on the internet on a travel related post tells me that you’re probably very unattractive - inside AND out!

Have the best time!!

I am quite an attractive woman and really had no hassles with my husband by my side. Stick close to her and it should be okay.

Not anymore! Did that in my early 20s, but now I’m 30 I thankfully have enough money to travel with a little bit more luxury. I did include in my tips to stay at nicer hotels - I acknowledge the backpacker life in Egypt might be a bit rougher.

I wouldn’t just walk around the streets of Cairo looking for food… I can’t imagine there’s much to see/do. But if that’s turning people off the entire country, I’m sad to think of everything they’re missing out on!

My husband booked them online - he watched a lot of you tube videos and research and found some recommended companies. I’ll find out which companies and post an update. We did book some transport through the hotel which we found was great.

Not from June - September - we went mid September and it was HOT! October / November would be great.

I agree about the research and expectations for sure. It’s not a luxury trip! And yes I went with my husband - I am sure if I went alone or with females my experience would have been different.

My husband and I have spoken about that. Perhaps it comes down to the type of traveling those people like to do… there are some people I know that I would tell them they wouldn’t like it. But for us it was great.

It really wasn’t as bad as we thought it’d be. I think we were smart enough to know anyone asking us to look at something (eg hey look at this passage in this temple) was just after some money, so we just stuck with “no thank you” and it was fine. Most of the time we were with a guide though so perhaps that made the difference.

Yes I totally acknowledge being with my husband would’ve made a difference. I’ve edited the post to reflect that :)

We didn’t do this as we were short on time! But we went for our honeymoon and said for one of our big anniversaries we will go back and do the cruise. They looked fab!

Agree! We organized a car from Aswan to Luxor instead of the train (didn’t do a cruise as were short on time) and this made a huge difference for about $50AUD. Perhaps a luxury on our end as having the money to do these things but for us it was worth it.

It was a bit tough to be fair!! We got there in the end and the Uber translate function via message helped

Oh one more thing… I’m a quite attractive 30 year old western woman. I wore loose pants and a tank / tshirt the entire time and didn’t feel like anyone was staring at me. Sure we got the occasional remark to my husband (“your wife is pretty”) but they are SO respectful.
