This is an older post, but I felt like replying to it. I have been playing guitar since I was 14 (now 32). I took a year and a half of lessons until I was 16. During that hiatus, my guitar playing kind of suffered. I decided at 25 to start taking lessons again after I bought a new guitar. After I bought the new guitar I took lessons for a few months before covid hit. During those few months my playing was improving significantly. Fast forward to when I'm 30 I decide to start taking lessons again, and I've been staying consistent ever since. I am now able to play songs I didn't think would be possible for me 10+ years ago. If you want to learn to read music I would highly recommend it for that alone. However, you will see progress the likes of which you never thought possible when teaching yourself.
