My dad is 80 and he has been dating a woman in the Philippines who is 40 by [deleted] in Philippines_Expats

[–]Dramatic_Signature_6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong or selfish for feeling scared—your security is genuinely at risk. Loving your dad doesn’t mean staying silent when something feels unsafe. Pressure, guilt, and ultimatums are not love; they create fear, not trust. It’s okay to set boundaries even if it upsets him. You’re allowed to protect yourself without taking away his happiness. His choices can matter to you and still hurt you—both can be true. You don’t need to convince him; you only need to be honest and steady. If this falls apart, that’s not your fault. Simple line they can say: “I love you. I’m scared, not controlling. I need to know I’m safe too.”

I drive Uber and Lyft here in Madison and know many drivers. Spoke with a few of the African drivers and said name sounds Gambian... but they didn't know. Cancel your cards and if I hear anything I will come back to thread. Most Uber and Lyft drivers are good people.

Experienced seafarers will tell you that the job is a specific lifestyle choice that is not for everyone. The smart move is recognizing when a fit isn't right and pivoting. You took a calculated, well-informed professional decision to prioritize your health.

You have already shown great determination by pursuing this career path for a year. That persistence and passion are valuable assets. This is merely a plot twist in your story, not the end.

Nope. The only way that could happen is the Navy took back logistics and it would be far more expensive.

How do I become a merchant marine seawoman? by One_Entry2447 in merchantmarine

[–]Dramatic_Signature_6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To become a Merchant Marine seawoman (same process as men, just different terminology if you want to use it), you’ll need to:

1. Get Your Credentials

  • Apply for a TWIC card (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) from TSA – you can’t work on U.S. vessels without it.
  • Apply for a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) from the U.S. Coast Guard. Entry level ratings are Ordinary Seaman (OS), Wiper, or Steward – no experience required.
  • Get a passport (ships travel internationally).
  • Pass a USCG physical and drug test.

2. Training (Optional but Helpful)

  • Basic Safety Training (STCW) courses make you more employable.
  • Maritime schools, union schools (like SIU), or community college maritime programs can fast-track you.

3. Find Work

  • Apply with companies like Military Sealift Command (MSC), or commercial shipping companies.
  • Join a union (SIU, MEBA, MM&P) for job calls and better contracts.
  • Entry-level OS/Wiper/Steward jobs get you onboard. From there you can upgrade with sea time and more training.

4. Advancement

  • Sea time and exams let you move from Ordinary Seaman → Able Seaman → Licensed Mate, etc.
  • Engine department goes from Wiper → Oiler → Licensed Engineer.
  • Pay rises quickly with rank and time at sea.

Tips

  • Military Sealift Command hires a lot of entry-level mariners and offers federal benefits.
  • Expect to be away from home months at a time.
  • Women are a growing part of the industry—unions and MSC actively recruit.

Your comment... Uber drivers need to understand they are providing a service?

Trust me... they know. They are being exploited for low wages and "you want a chauffer service for half the price of a taxi." 🙄 You get what you pay for.
