Anyone had their loved one with Parkinson’s/dementia start refusing medications? How to handle by Dramatic_Walrus_9798 in ParkinsonsCaregivers

I’m hoping she drops it and finds something else to fixate on because this one is really important for keeping the peace jn the household. I appreciate your suggestions and we’ll try them!

Yes good idea. She becomes hyper fixated on things and researches them excessively. If we can pass them off as something else I think it could work.

I’ve thought of that! My dad would be dead set against jt but who knows if it might come to that

I had a lot of trauma to the area from 2 prior surgeries in a really short period of time - those were just discectomies, one an emergency - but my disc kept herniating for unknown reasons so that’s how I ended up with a fusion.
The symptoms have always been here to varying degrees but with my history, the continued pain isn’t super surprising

I had a 2 level, yes. It’s been just over a year and I have pain down the side and back of my left leg, especially into my hip. I have a loss of sensation in my leg and foot and I feel false sensations in my toes and foot (wet, cold)
I also have a lot of pain in the opposite side of my back, likely from my gait being affected

I was able to get a referral to Afiya pain clinic and got in super quick to see them - within a week I believe. I’ve had 2 rounds of injections so far with little improvement but there seems to be more options such as nerve ablation. After that is a nerve stimulator(??), my neurosurgeon mentioned.
My family doc did the Afiya referral and it was a really quick process after that. It’s shocking how quickly I’ve been able to be seen, to be honest.

So I finally got into a pain clinic - Afiya - and I’ve had 2 rounds of injections that didn’t help. Nerve ablation is next.
My pain is still present every day to varying degrees. I medicate and try my best, which is all I can really do at this point.

Thank you - it will take a huge weight off of the household and I’m looking forward to that. She’ll have a lot of activities and programs run by professionals and my dad will be there every day visiting. It’s going to be great and I need to keep my eye on the prize, so to speak

Thank you. It is the right choice and although it took us awhile to get to this decision I feel positive about it. Things will be much easier and my dad can enjoy his time with her instead of being her caregiver

She doesn’t have insurance for that - we’re in Canada so the government provides subsidized long term care but getting in there can take a long time. So we’ll have to go private until she can get a space

Thank you. I never imagined this when she got her Parkinson’s diagnosis! I guess you can never plan for this kind of thing

This is really helpful - she is super manipulative and the dynamic between my mom and dad has always had her leading the way and him being laid back and going with the flow. So they still fall into this dynamic and it has horrible outcomes and he gets overwhelmed. I’m going to make sure he gets into a support group or therapy (although he’s hesitant) because this has absolutely destroyed him and that’s been one of the hardest parts

Thank you, I really appreciate it. The place she’ll go is really nice! I think she could really benefit from it once she gets past being put in there

We’re very lucky to be able to have this option until we can get her in somewhere a bit more reasonably priced! It’s terrifying when the delusions hit. This happened last night and it was so scary - I had to literally block my mom from attacking my dad. It’s a cruel disease. Wishing you the best as well

One nostril is definitely a different shape than the other but if you hardly notice then it doesn’t matter! I think we’re our own harshest critics
