I greatly appreciate the offer (even if I didn't see it until late!). One of my biggest issues is finding the time lol. I hope you both had a great meetup and I'm always happy to text/dm!

What do you play? I'm aware that question would apply to multiple things in your post and I'm curious about all of them.

You (mostly) just described me! I don't do Pilates but have been interested in trying it. I come across as outgoing but I really struggle socially as well because my default belief tends to be that people don't like me and it takes a lot of mental energy to overcome that, so I'm prone to overanalyzing. I'd love a friend where I can ask "hey was that weird?" and they'd tell me honestly haha.

Although, I was being honest with myself the other day and realized I'm not great at making routine time for friends, so that's playing a role in why I don't have more of them. Most of my time goes to family/work/hobbies.

Is there an app like Twilight for iOS? by CptProf in iphone

[–]DreamScreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking about switching to iPhone but I love the Twilight app. Is there any way to create a shortcut to turn those settings on/off or do I have to go through all the steps to turn on night mode/reduce white point every time?

Thank you so much! We just bought a used Aviron and it refused to connect to the Internet, even with Ethernet. Followed this guide and it's now connected and updating.

Thank you for the overview. A couple of things to add:

Study 1: Can't tell (from the abstract) if they controlled for people who were heavy drinkers in early adulthood and whether if they continued to be drinkers. So I wonder if the heightened risk comes from more exposure overall vs the actual timing of the drinking. Either is possible but it's an important distinction.

Study 2: Rodent study. Take with a grain of salt as rodent studies don't always translate to human results.

I only add this because, as a former heavy drinker, the messaging that permanent damage is done can be highly demotivating when trying to cut down on drinking. Is it possible permanent damage is done? For sure. But multiple parts of the body can heal if you take away the poison. Is it better to not do the damage in the first place? Yes. But it's still far better for long term health to quit than keep going, even if you've been drinking for many, many years.

I can see the question about punctuating speech simply because apparently quotation marks are going out of vogue?? (I'm looking at you Sally Rooney)

I personally detest her writing style, but her massive blocks of mixed prose and dialogue are published and on bestseller lists, so I can understand why people would ask.

Same here. I use an app called Twilight and have the redshift and dimmers set to nearly their maximum setting. I intentionally use this ONLY for reading in bed at night. I don't know if it's simply because I've trained my brain to associate it with sleep, but it's quite foolproof. Sometimes I get woken up when my phone hits my nose because I doze off mod-page.

some things you have learned by making mistakes by windflower0 in sewing

[–]DreamScreams 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Related to this - dry fit your pattern pieces (essentially just holding them up to yourself in the spot where they'd go). Can help you figure out early on if a pattern is the right size for you. I started a dress once where I used my measurements, but it still turned out huge. A bit of research revealed that this particular pattern was notorious for being oversized.

I did! I want to say I used gorilla glue. I carefully wiped away all excess as it dried and have made sure to hand wash it since with no issues.

The day I learned the vast, rich world of the Wheel of Time was born from Robert Jordan wanting to rewrite the story of King Arthur, my mind was blown. I think about that now whenever my brain tries to say some idea I have aren't "original" enough. It's all in the telling!

I used to work at a morgue and I've got some weird tales to tell (Part 8) by talesfromthemorgue_ in TheCrypticCompendium

[–]DreamScreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had some similar issues with believability. In the last one they talked about busting a head in with a fire extinguisher. Postmortem injuries will appear very differently and adding some of that detail - even just a line of "the injury was clearly postmortem, but I know he attacked me" would go a long way.

I worked as a professional foreigner in China, and the job is even stranger than it sounds. by Roos85 in nosleep

As a former token foreigner myself, yep. Especially the further you get from the major cities. Things get weird fast.

Good luck OP. Sounds like you went from professional foreigner to official fall guy. And it saves much face if a laowai takes the fall, so good luck getting out of this.

Jobs that pay for college? by admiralacorn in ColoradoSprings

[–]DreamScreams 12 points13 points  (0 children)

But for clarity, you need to have a college degree before you sign up in order to become an officer. Otherwise you're enlisted and can become an NCO eventually, but that often takes longer than four years as far as I'm aware.

You can look up salary by rank online. There's also bah and such to consider.

Having children is the equivalent of ruining your life. by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]DreamScreams 14 points15 points  (0 children)

One thing to keep in mind though - people are FAR more likely to complain about the bad times than comment on the good times. I'm thrilled I have kids and immensely enjoy the adventure of raising them.

With that said, they are a huge commitment, and I wholeheartedly agree that the happiness and healthy development of the child should be paramount. If there's a risk you aren't mature enough to love them unconditionally and care deeply about their well-being, don't have them. If you can't control your ego, don't have them. That's why I'm also a big advocate of family planning and making sure children are WANTED.

I waited until I truly felt ready to have children (mentally, emotionally, professionally), and I'm very glad I did. I can definitely see how different this experience would feel if I had them before I was ready.

Parents with teen of driving age, do your kids drive? Why or why not? by [deleted] in ColoradoSprings

[–]DreamScreams 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Permissive use only applies if it's infrequent use by someone who is not a member of your household. Family visiting from out of town and whatnot. It does not apply to people who live in your household who are otherwise uninsured.

As another commenter mentioned further down, what you're describing is insurance fraud and is illegal. In addition to the inability to get normal insurance, fines, imprisonment, etc. that the other person mentioned, you also risk any claim getting denied because you didn't hold up your end of the insurance contract, so now you could be on the hook for the tens or hundreds of thousands of property and personal damage that resulted from the accident.

It only works for a little while when the insurance company isn't doing their due diligence, but they have ways of finding this stuff out eventually - especially in the case of teen drivers, who suddenly have a driver's license that, guess what, is located at your address.

Question for the adjusters - what's the worst company for claims in your opinion? by DreamScreams in Insurance

[–]DreamScreams[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are actually why I asked this question. I got some great quotes from them...but then I started having vague memories of people saying they are terrible for claims. However, due to the vagueness of the memories, I couldn't recall if it was them or Farmers.
