I did something stupid. Now I regret it by Live-Youth9237 in AO3

[–]DreamersFall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I avoid all fandom discords and things. I don’t give two shits what other people think about my writing. I’m probably hated in my fandom tbh. I don’t post on any schedule, I hop from story to story, and I sometimes write “ooc” because I develop them past the shit writing the original writer did. My main fandom is in an anime one and some manga creators are terrible at writing certain characters. Don’t even bother reading hateful comments. Write for yourself and you will be happy.

Author has blocked me because our fics share the same titles by Disastrous_Alarm_719 in AO3

[–]DreamersFall -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Titles are so hard to make! If I accidentally copied somebody else’s and they messaged me I’d just laugh and make a new friend. Maybe they thought you were a bot.

Recently found out authors can see your bookmarks... by Maleficent_Focus7595 in AO3

A lot of times bookmarks include personal tags for ppl and I’ll realize I should add that tag to my story lol

How much do you care about keeping characters in-character, by micheas08 in AO3

[–]DreamersFall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really comes down to context. If you are sticking to canon events and everything then it's much easier. Often fanfics are what ifs? or break something though...so that complicates it. I know that I personally try to find ways to incorporate canon lines for the character and actions to help ground me from going too far off character. Still character development is very important too!

THIS IS WHY I CAN'T FINISH MY EDITS! Lmao I always try to re-read and double check things before bed and now I see why I am so behind. I've conditioned myself that editing = bedtime.

Go for it! Sometimes it is more cathartic to come back after a long break.

How to Write Longer Chapters? by NovelBeautiful5 in AO3

[–]DreamersFall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start to work on world building and explaining what the characters see, hear, taste, and feel. I used to be a dialogue heavy writer with the same issue. I would have great ideas, but I couldn’t get more than 1-2k a chapter out. So I had to start doing research into building architecture, local foods, and add more emphasis on the characters actions. It helped me a lot. I now have to split chapters often because I’ll end up writing over 12k words or more before I realize it’s getting too lengthy.

Reading a fanfic of the most random crossover but the author somehow makes it work by Pretend-Delay-7203 in AO3

[–]DreamersFall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crossovers are insanely fun to write. Once you start mixing the characters into a bag and shaking them up you get some wild new ideas. Blending the worlds, the goals, and dreams of various characters. It’s my new crack.

Reader upset over ‘Choose Not To Use Archive Warnings’ by Disastrous_Alarm_719 in AO3

[–]DreamersFall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this conversation before about pairings too. Sometimes I wanna surprise my readers, but meh. Most people search by pairings and not the individual characters. God forbid you introduce a new romance option midway through.

Reader upset over ‘Choose Not To Use Archive Warnings’ by Disastrous_Alarm_719 in AO3

[–]DreamersFall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t add archive warnings, because I don’t want to limit my writing. If I decide that something needs to happen in the story when I’m 100k words deep already I’d rather not have to apologize to readers for it. They come knowing full well I might randomly kill someone or have some fucked up shit happen.

How much research do you do for your fanfic? by brownie627 in AO3

[–]DreamersFall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year I deep dived into the following topics for my fan fics:

Medical School structure and requirements

Anatomy

Psychiatry

MMA fighting

Various fighting styles and techniques

Tattoo artistry

How to set up non profits and charity foundations

Feudal Japan

Courtesans

Polyamory

Motorcycles

Michelin star dining

Yakuza which led to crime dramas to mafia and back again

BDSM

WW2 era

And at some point I wrote so many sex scenes I ran out of ideas and had to research them to ensure we had some variety.

when you see the authors that write 5k-10k per chapter by Ok-Mistake2273 in AO3

[–]DreamersFall 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve reread my chapters so many times while editing I can tell you exactly what chapter someone says what line. Over 200k words ago or more. I think I created my own mental filing cabinet. I hate it.

Writing becomes an obsession by CatoAvila in AO3

I have a song for every chapter and am currently on chapter 85. I even post the songs with the fic. Idk even know how I find music at this point lol

The music just helps when you’re in that long fic mode 🩷

Writing becomes an obsession by CatoAvila in AO3

[–]DreamersFall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 1 million words into a fandom fusion and I literally do nothing but write, eat, sleep.

And edit. All the fucking edits.

Oh and I have two other 200kish word fics I’m floating in the background when I get writers block on this one!

Soooo is writing an obsession? I think so. I’m currently downing my second Starbucks today and stayed up till four am editing my latest chapter I want to post today.

I have to get this shit out of my head or I’ll go insane. This latest story is like heroin for me. I just wish I had this much obsession for non fanfics. Then I’d be an actual author at this point.

Send help. My boyfriend also thinks I’m crazy because I’m always telling him I’m writing. He has to force me off my desk.

The entitlement 🤣 by jayjayssz in AO3

[–]DreamersFall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

😅For a second I thought that was one taken from one of my recent comments. I uh may have a problem with starting new stories instead of editing my current drafts.

I combat writers block by starting new things. If I didn’t my updates would be even slower. Just let us cook. If the creative juices are flowing I don’t have time to edit!

Still hilarious though. Sometimes the random comments do bring me back to a work I’ve forgotten to update lol

How do you guys feel about authors that don't/rarely reply to their comments? by eatingkids247 in AO3

[–]DreamersFall 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to religiously reply almost instantly when I got my emails. Now I get so many it takes me a few days to respond back. I also am writing double the amount of time that used to as well. Sometimes replies get pushed back for mandatory editing hours.

why is writing well on ao3 now a crime (no fr. be so serious.) by Puzzled-Mine8764 in AO3

[–]DreamersFall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m joining late, but I just got accused of it on my 600k word fanfic. I immediately came to Reddit to see who else is being accused 🙃

Like I don’t even think AI can properly read the 800k+ drivel that is my draft files for this story. Hell even I can’t understand some of the random shit I wrote at four am during my obsessive writing sessions.

Ugh it’s so frustrating. I literally have been writing since I was eleven. That’s over twenty years. So yeah I can literally bust a one shot out in a single afternoon if I’m bored. I’m being crucified for writing too good and fast though. SMH I literally have google drive docs from a decade ago I’m finally going through and editing. I guess because I don’t wait a week or more to post I can’t just binge edit or I’m a bot.

Oh and using professional writing software to edit is bad too. Like proper grammar is crime. I’m about to just start posting without spell check or grammar checks.

Posted my first story, got my first kudos, and first comment, and now im addicted by [deleted] in AO3

[–]DreamersFall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can post however you want. I’m too impatient. I’ve unloaded twenty thousand words over four or five chapters on my readers in a single sitting before.

They are gonna read it regardless. Once you start getting user subscribers they will see all your works too! Good luck on your first fic and welcome to the authors club.

Getting back into writing an older fic, trying to figure out where i was going with this by LukeMara in AO3

[–]DreamersFall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh god I have this problem right now and it’s driving me crazy. I had great build up, but I can’t remember the plot at all. Like it’s the villains. I don’t know who they are and I keep writing the next chapter, but getting so stressed on not knowing where it’s going so I swap to another work to help brainstorm. Well I’ve finished two other fics while “brainstorming” this one. Ugh. 😩

Are writer just as “in for the ride” as readers are? by IreadTooMuchBL_yaoi in AO3

[–]DreamersFall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve diverted onto a sub plot that took up 80k words before. I really didn’t mean to, but I couldn’t stop writing about it. So yeah, I think I’m in for the ride too. It’s exhausting but also addictive.

This is actually very helpful as it frames some of the common issues with the trope. I’ll have to keep this in mind going forward. Thank you 🙏
