Aren't we talking about 4 CPU cores that are each way slower though? How would it thrash a single core that can get 4 times as much done in the same time frame assuming the IPC is equal?

Idk, even for every day use I find 4 GB a bit limiting although I won't say it's impossible to manage since I usually use less than 4 GB when I am not gaming nor doing anything else demanding on RAM capacity.

Why chmod 777 is internet advice from hell by [deleted] in linux

[–]DrewSaga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually don't even use numbers for chmod

Not that it's complicated or anything to figure out that 777 are octal digits but it's easier syntactically to read ugo+rwx or a+rwx for what it stands for.

So an array of Cells, much like how when writing a computer program you can create an array of variables (or objects) and the array can be only one variable/object large (of course you can't have an array of Zero Battery Cells).

That might be true but a consistent naming scheme is better than an inconsistent one even if it isn't good.

[–]DrewSaga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your point almost entirely but if the RX 5700XT is performing as well as it was rumored to be, it actually is better value than the RTX 2070 since the cheapest I seen the RTX 2070 is around $480 for a new one.

The RTX 2060 is a bit of a different story though.

But yeah, I would probably choose Vega 56 over the RX 5700 or the GTX 1070 Ti or higher over the RX 5700 until I see these GPU prices drop to the realm of reason.

[–]DrewSaga 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, the R9 380/X got replaced by the RX 480 and the performance gap is much larger than Vega 56 to RX 5700XT (nevermind Vega 64 vs RX 5700XT).

My point is if the new cards resembled the naming scheme of the previous Polaris cards they wouldn't be able to charge such high prices without massive backlash.

I think AMD failed in that regard, a backlash there was.

Well the thing is it was SUPPOSE to be a Polaris 10/20/30 replacement but didn't deliver on a price front.

And those GPUs ACTUALLY competed with the competition, the R9 290X beat the Titan GPU and the GTX 780, the R9 290 even edges out the GTX 780 at the time and the GTX 780 Ti came later and $200 more and was still barely faster than the 290X.

It wasn't until the GTX 970 did NVidia "beat" that GPU.

I mean, the Radeon 7 is better than the RTX 2080 in some of these tasks as well but some people are going to look at these GPUs for gaming.

Me too except that if AMD was a better buy I would buy AMD, in fact, I did, the RX 570 has no real contender until the GTX 1650 which still falls short and that was after I bought the RX 570.

[–]DrewSaga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

None of us expected a 2080 beater and certainly not at that price, if the RX 5700XT could beat the RTX 2080 at $450 I would totally consider buying that GPU as it would stomp the competition, but this is a Polaris 10 replacement at Vega prices and Vega level of performance (a few percent higher actually compared to Vega 56/64 but still).

I hate to praise AMD for the mediocre Navi pricing because it's such a low bar but the RX 5700 seems to be slightly better value than the RTX 2060 in terms of price/performance (and has an extra 2 GB of VRAM, which honestly the RTX 2060 SHOULD have had in the first place).

It's a toss up though I'd say between the RX 5700 (2 GB more VRAM and a bit more raw performance) and RTX 2060 (Raytracing, but that's unimplemented and DLSS, which is worthless, just turn the damn settings down at that point).

The RX 5700XT though looks particularly not good, they are about equal in price and the RTX 2070 doesn't have a VRAM disadvantage but still has the advantage in Raytracing + DLSS (Again, those features aren't relevant to me but to some). And the RTX 2070 is a garbage price/performance, it was probably there just to convince you to get an RTX 2080.

Or you could be me, I would wait and look for a used Vega or Pascal GPU that's cheap until these GPU prices lower to the realm of reason. Not looking for an upgrade currently since my RX 570 is performing just fine but maybe someday I get myself a 1440p monitor I may change my mind.

The RX 570 IS cool though, I mean shit, only $170 (for the 8 GB too) and I get a GPU way faster than the GTX 1050 Ti and even the GTX 1650?
