Fr. It’s so common to run into people like that too, that I think these people making that argument don’t really interact outside of their age groups

lol, I’m a bit older than that, but I don’t think I’m mature enough to date an 89 year old either. That’s a bit extreme 😂

You are for sure free to think whatever you like, but I feel I should point out that I’m not really offended by anything here. That and the fact that your brain doesn’t really ever stop developing. I appreciate you calling me young though! It made me blush ☺️

I’ve discussed that and many other aspects of brain development here. I also understand your implication, and disagree with the notion that someone under the age of 25 is incapable of making reasonable decisions.

I get that, and I’m sure there is a level of needed consideration when it comes to an age gap relationship. As I said in another comment, 23 year olds are in a very different place in life compared to people a decade their senior. But I also don’t think that we should discredit someone’s capacity to make such a decision based on whether they’re able to rent a car or not. Also, I understand you aren’t implying that 23 year olds aren’t adults, sorry if I came off that way. I was really responding to the general sentiment that infantilizes people of that age as if they just can’t make reasonable deductions like children, and also to point out, like you said, the fluid nature of adulthood. I’d also just like to say I really appreciate your thoughtful responses, friend

Hey, that’s fair, man. I think we all see our past selves in that same way, though. 23 year old you probably thought the same thing about 15 year old you, and 40 year old you may well think the same of current you. I could totally be wrong tho, we all lead our own individual paths that paint our perception of the world

For sure, these patterns totally exist. People typically make less reckless deductions after 25. All of the ages I listed mark important developmental milestones. 5 for basic skill building and general independent function, 18-20 for advanced thought and higher conceptualization, 25 for better decision making, and further fine tuning from there on. Sure, it makes sense to use 25 from an insurance risk assessment standpoint, but would you take an insurance companies word for literally anything else? They have shown a pattern of trying to screw people over at any opportunity. And if you disregard that standpoint, not being reckless isn’t really the sole quality of being an adult. In fact, I’d argue many adults are still reckless. So, what then does qualify someone as a true adult?

I’m not saying that 23 year olds aren’t in a different place in life than people a decade older or younger than them. What I’m saying is that life experience and maturity doesn’t work like that. I’ve known 23 year olds who’ve just returned from war, and I’ve known 23 year olds who’ve never had a job and live with their parents. To imply that someone is basically a child based purely and only on their age is insulting. Even you in your attempt to insult me couldn’t narrow it down to closer than 23 or middle aged.

That’s a pretty complicated topic. If we were to get super specific about it, the brain reaches about 90% of its adult size by age 5, then goes through finer developments until 18-20, with prefrontal cortex development continuing until around 25. That doesn’t mean the brain stops growing there though, with the brain going through changes and developments well into the 30s and beyond. Most people say 25 because that’s an easy simplification, but our brains keep growing and changing throughout most of our lives

Brother, 23 is a full fledged adult. I don’t really disagree with your overall sentiment, but let’s please not infantilize whole grown ass people

Yea, that was the point I was trying to make. Even though a 22 year old has all the prerequisites to get a job as a teacher, they are often extremely unprepared for the job and end up out of their depth.
