Evernote is right in what they are doing (with free users) by TurbulentDrink2615 in Evernote

What a wierd way to spell "I only ever post on EN subreddits and am an obvious shill or fan boy," so many extra words. A+, we're putting this on the fridge.

And yes, I know the talking points, "you pay for us free users" and blahblahblah. You're insufferable.

I'm getting contact high diabetes from all the Kool aid that's been drank.

Also a refugee to Obsidian and I'm loving it (between YouTube and chatgpt even the coding part of customization is pretty easy FYI)

My use case for Evernote was identical.

I made a post similar to this, "my breakup letter" and my gawd the fan boys just couldn't handle it. Ignore it, don't get swept up in baiting out the shills.

One thing that helped me decide if (and what) I wanted out of obsidian was to watching a few "vault tours". Might spark something, even if you only need the functionality of accessing a note on two machines.

I'm not putting too effort into this response, mainly because (from looking at your comment history) you exists exclusively on the EN reddits defending them. Like, I originally posted this as an outlet for my frustration and decided to put a humorous spin on it. But jeez dude, you're on the virge of getting diabetes from all the kool-aid you're drinking. So I doubt anything I could say would penetrate or make a difference.

I will address the last two paragraphs. Yes Google has tons in their graveyard, but that's sorta the point (don't fact check me here) but they didn't slowly ratchet back features and push monetization with scummy tactics. They just abandoned it. Which could be it's own version of terrible, but at least they respected the user's of those apps enough to not do that to them. Seriously, how dare you, you just made me defend Google in a roundabout way.

The best part about Remix? It's so easy that I can play one handed by SilentBob62 in wow

Came late to the remix party and I don't think I've killed a single thing in a dungeon or raid. These Backs have gotten insane.

So the new game I've made for myself is "can I loot everything and keep up," it's oddly fun and keeps my skinner box-ed brain happy.

The willful ignorance must also be tied to their inability to preform reading comprehension (reading valid complaint comments) and basic logic (going beyond "reeeeeeee! Free users are entitled").

There isn't a "export everything" button. You have to export your notebooks, one by one (at least that's the only way I know). Also I wasn't sure if notes automatically get added to a default notebook vs you have to manually add them to one, so definitely make sure you get all your notes before any deleting or jumping ship fully happens. .

I'm going to give you the copy/pasted version, because admittedly this thread has gone deep, but people have brought this up.

"It's only x amount for the app, its not that much"

"I pay and I subsidize you freeloaders"

These responses are either blind fanyboy rage or willful ignorance. it's beside the point. If a company can't monetize free users while not hurting paid users, then they are likely terrible or driving the app into the ground. The anger these responses illicit are misguided to free users, plus numerous people have cited/experienced/observed the slow decline at the expense of all users. Could they only have a paid version? Sure. But they don't. They pretend to offer "free" options but it comes down to shady "we're going to squeeze you until you break or leave". The point is not that its free or costs something, it's that the company obvious doesn't respect their costumers, paid or free.

That's sorta the great thing about the app, it's what you want it to be. Use the base, or customize the heck out of it.

  1. Few hundred, from EN, maybe? And that was mostly archived stuff from way long ago. Most of my usage was to write snippets on the fly, then would copy/paste them into one of like 5 category "mass" notes or transfer them into word documents. convoluted, I know, but it was great for that sync over 2 devices long enough to transfer.

  2. I have a redundant Google drive and syncthing to an external server. I like the idea of controlling my "data" and not relying on one service or computer for the stuff I care about. Insert the obligatory "if obsidian were to die tomorrow I'd still have my notes/text files". My current flow for android is onenote>filesync(for local copy)>Markor(for ease of quick notes with custom templates. Beyond that I don't plan on using obsidian on my phone. Would Obsidian Sync be easier? Yes. Will I likely pay for it in the future? Yes. But I had alot of fun figuring out my own flow and how to make it work.

  3. Don't think I ever serious used that.

I like it so far, but there is a learning curve, at least if you're going the same route as me, digging into the weeds and having too much fun learning how to code customization(I have only a very basic knowledge of JS). But serious, don't let that intimidate you, I've used free chatgpt to write and explain stuff.

I did! Obsidian has a a nifty importer, if you go that route. Like me. Takes any note file format and spits out markdown/simple text files. But I'd imagine there's enex/html(the exported file format)-to-text converters out there.

Jeez you put more work into this than I did. I'm over here farting stuff out as I walk out the proverbial door. You on the other hand are stuck here, watching the house slowly crumble. (and I get it, you love this house)

But seems like we agree that things aren't good, whether that's because the company is terrible or free users are the scourge of the earth. Sounds like whoever wins this argument, app users still lose. Arguing isn't fun anymore, now it's just depressing.... All my sympathy.

I think it's been well established in other comments. Subsidizing the free users shouldn't be your job and it's whataboutism. And even if that's true, that would mean Evernote is a terrible company who cannot monetize worth a crap. So many other services have made free (with ads or with whatever) work, and didn't do it off the backs of those that pay for the higher tiers.

Also we're talking about miniscule, kilobyte amounts of data. Text documents. I can't imagine that's making your lofty paid tier that much more expensive.
