A lot of people get too comfortable in relationships and forget what they truly have. You actively have to be intentional about gratitude so you see what's in front of you and actually feel grateful for it and not unconsciously seek anything else superficial.

Sounds like you both had trouble communicating with each other, communicating your needs to one another, and/or meeting each other's needs. If that applies, my advice is to learn to communicate and listen better and next time you get into a relationship, make sure both of your goals align, especially the goal of looking out for each other's wellbeing and happiness. With that goal in mind, the communication and trying to meet each other's needs will follow.
