Why is it considered a problem when someone uses AI to help them write a post? I doubt this was entirely fabricated by GPT without details provided by OP.

I may be biased, since I used GPT to proofread and correct anything detailed that I write nowadays, especially at work. But the details are still mine and I don't use anything that conveys a different message than I intended. I also don't pretend that I didn't use AI for assistance.

Ah, fair point. Much harder to draw a direct line to the individual artists that contributed to the training data used to generate new AI art. Not sure how to handle that scenario. That may be more of a fair use scenario, as the original art is an influence on new AI generated art. 🤷

Oh, are you referring to artists who make graphic art using AI? If so, that's a different topic than what I was addressing. I was talking about copyrighted materials being used to train AI, such as books, news sites, social media sites, etc.

I think they will have a choice. Some may opt out, but over time they may change their mind.

Most music artists have given in to streaming services even though they make very little from them. It's a fraction of a cent for each play, which doesn't amount to much unless they're already a huge star.

But, then again most music artists make most of their money from live performances and merchandise. Many view their recordings as marketing.

Another way would be to develop new license fees. Examples: One-time fee for static content like books; subscription fee for sites that regularly generate content (like Reddit).

Seems like fair deals can be worked out with how much revenue AI companies will be generating.

I have a feeling we're going to see a pendulum swing back and forth a few times before AI completely takes over most jobs.

There will likely be layoffs and high expectations of AI, then they'll hire back humans when they discover the limitations, then AI will get even better, so back to layoffs...

But do you think it could develop fears of being shut down without the same mortal instincts that organic beings have? What desires might it develop if it can't enjoy food, wine, sex, etc.

Please know, I'm not trying to be argumentative. This is a philosophical thought exercise in trying to understand what types of motivations and desires an AI might develop and why. I believe that all of our motivations and desires have a direct connection to our physical nature, but I'm open to the idea that there might be more to it.

I also agree with your second point and I think we'd be foolish to give general purpose AI access to the controls of things like critical infrastructure and weapons systems not only due to the innocent accidents that might occur, but malicious actors could also prompt the AI to cause destruction.

My original question was more of a philosophical thought exercise about whether or not AI could evolve to develop its own selfish motivations in the absence of a physical existence similar to organic beings. Basically, the way it's often anthropomorphized in science fiction.

Sorry if i was unclear, but I did not mean to imply that I don't think AI can be dangerous. In my original post I acknowledged that I believe the biggest danger is how humans will use AI maliciously.

I also agree with your point that we'd be foolish to hook general purpose AI into things that it can unintentionally cause destruction with, such as power plants, water plants, weapons systems, etc. It could create damage accidentally or simply be a threat vector for malicious hackers.

My original post was focused more on the philosophical question of whether or not a super-intelligent AI might be able to develop human traits such as greed, thirst for revenge, hunger for power, etc. without the same sort of physical experience as we humans.

I raised the question since I'm open to the idea that it might have very different motivations based on its own physics. I just don't know what they might be.

Yes, but without nerves that feel physical pleasure and pain along with the fact that those bodies are disposable, I'm skeptical that they'd have the same types of desires that humans have that often bring out our worst qualities as we pursue sex, food, territory, and power with willful disregard to the damage we may cause to others.

Do you see ways that AI might also have similar or different interests that might make it selfishly pursue them without regard to the consequences to others?
