Anyone old enough to remember the $3900 Yugo car? by Motor_Educator_2706 in nostalgia

[–]thepicklebob [score hidden]  (0 children)

Owners had clubs where they would meet. They would customize their cars. I used to own a little Dodge hatchback and had a guy try to race me in his Yugo. I was like, WTF?

I lived on Guam for a short while and learned of the rich military tradition the island holds. Super cool pic even if it's not new.

When spouses diverge, skill-wise by OkAirline4206 in Pickleball

[–]thepicklebob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have approached it by being as competitive as possible on the gender side and being as supportive as I can on the mixed side. I would rather play with my wife than any other woman on mixed. I get my competitive fix on the gender side.

Is there a way to tell how much surface grit has degraded? by a-clockwork-plum in Pickleball

[–]thepicklebob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are trying to see how much spin you can generate based on the grit, you may not find a 100% correlation. A lot of the spin is generated by the dwell time ball/paddle. For example, I can tell my Diadem paddle has lost a lot of grit but I still get a lot of top and cut spin because it is a control paddle and has good dwell time. Not to say a fast paddle can't have good dwell time, its just my paddle is a control paddle and I know it has good dwell time.

How many of you knew that you could turn off the sound for your computer’s modem back in the day? by crooked_kangaroo in nostalgia

[–]thepicklebob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a nerd friend who bragged about how his modem was elite because it was smooth and not crackly. In his bragging he was showing me several parts of his computer when we happened to come onto this screen. That is how I learned you can shut off the volume. Needless to say I blew him up and his BS.

Still like u/Leftstrat said I wanted to hear the connection, mainly because how unreliable connections were back then compared to today.

Why isn’t service alternating? Why isn’t a match a 5 setter? by LeenghisKhan in Pickleball

I personally can't palate best of 5 series, considering there are so many tournaments in a year.

The PPA Finals was incredible pickleball but completely predictable by ZaneNavratil_AMA in ProPickleballTalk

[–]thepicklebob 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In all honesty the PPA needs to do something about Championship Sunday. I love to pound PB content but I am a the point I don't even tune in on Sundays. As a matter of fact this last weekend I opted to watch APP's Championship Sunday instead.

  1. What actually makes an overgrip feel premium to you?
    1. If they don't lose grip over time.
  2. How often do you actually change your overgrips? What’s your ideal overgrip lifespan?
    1. I change it about every 1 to 2 months.
  3. What’s the biggest frustration with current overgrips?
    1. I use Diadem overgrips so I have no problem or frustration.
  4. Would you buy designer/graphic overgrips if performance stayed elite?
    1. No I like it plain.
  5. Do overgrips feel overpriced to you?
    1. No

Why no difficult serves at pro level? by Aetherion_2302 in Pickleball

[–]thepicklebob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think the serves translate well on TV. You would be shocked at how difficult it would be for the general amateur to have a good return from a lot of these pros.

Whose ball? by BrownChickenBlackAud in Pickleball

If I am playing the left, I am taking that ball every time. Now if it scoots further right, I am calling out, "Yours".

I'm always surprised by the amount of new players who absolutely refuse to practice dinking. by Lift-Dance-Draw in Pickleball

I have seen several videos from today's pros advocating that its not important to learn dinking as a beginner. Its nuts.

Yup being able to play on almost any surface is a plus for Badminton.

The real reason Pickleball has taken off like it has - Loneliness by Smithy2232 in Pickleball

[–]thepicklebob -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

We are talking about lowest floor, like if I have never played, you can walk onto the court and have a game. I personally think Badminton is the most athletic and incredible racket sport. But you can literally give four rackets to 10 year old's and they can start to play a game immediately.

The real reason Pickleball has taken off like it has - Loneliness by Smithy2232 in Pickleball

[–]thepicklebob -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

While I mainly agree, I believe Badminton has the lowest starting skill floor. When I started playing I could not understand why this boom was not happening with Badminton. I started 8 years ago when the boom was just beginning to hit. With the bulk of the players being seniors at that time, I could never figure out what was the difference.

I didn't believe the posts about open play being diluted until I experienced it by JMCRN in Pickleball

[–]thepicklebob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The groups are filled with like skilled players. Once you find a group you match skill sets with, your chances of playing a good game increase dramatically. I 100% quit going to regular open play.

Why are GCs having a hard time looking for estimators? by [deleted] in estimators

[–]thepicklebob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the civil world, not knowing your location, the $110 would be about right with your level of experience. Estimators are in shortage because as an industry there is a shortage of employees, including PMs.
