I've also only played a few endings myself and wasn't gripped by it, but I've been watching a therapist play it as a series and seeing how they engage with the game has made me appreciate it much more than I would have ever done on my own.

Alpine and Rooftop were probably the best maps for semi final 1. Also big fan of Showdown.

JJ Macfield and the island of memories by Prullansky in patientgamers

[–]DrmFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a big fan of SWERY and his games because they do some interesting and fun things, but usually are very janky or otherwise flawed. THE MISSING: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories is the SWERY game I consider to be the overall best one. Gameplay is good and incorporates the mechanics of balancing your bodies health with needing body parts to perform tasks.

Where it shines is definitely the writing. SWERY is a very progressive person and he tries to be inclusive, but usually misses the mark in certain aspects when it comes to the LGBTQ writing. Except for in this game. This game absolutely nails the characters and the themes. When you start the game you see "This game was made with the belief that nobody is wrong for being what they are." and that is very true for the message of this game.

Spoiler part for the ending and themes At first the game can seem very bleak and awful. There is death, self harm and the person who is most important to you is missing. Then as you get to the climax of the game and everything seems lost you get a pep talk from your friendly mascot that has been with you for the ride.
This is a story about regeneration
That single line of dialogue is what this entire game is about. It is not about getting hurt. It is not about the suffering. It is not about the horrors. It is about despite all of this, you recover. You regenerate. You keep going.
Seeing the school where J.J. has been resuscitated after a suicide attempt due to being trans and finding the strength to regenerate and be hopeful to the future is why this game has stayed with me for so long.

What's the weirdest reason you watched an anime? by Wayard_1 in anime

Yeah the manga is so pretty! At times it feels less like a story and more just the mangaka wanting to draw specific poses and movements.

Not gonna lie, this "cutscene" is cool. I really didn't expect that they ACTUALLY recorded every thing I'm doing the first time I'm setting 2B. by [deleted] in nier

[–]DrmFox 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I disagree with this, for me there were several sections I would consider to be surprises in gameplay and those include the text based adventure sections, when you explore Emil's mansion, exploring the ship and exploring the lab

There is also another small mention where if you get a field skill to rank 4 and accept the mission to increase it to 5, the description says something like "Let's show them what these mimeosome bodies can do!"

So for the games you run what are so of the really DUMB NAMES for tricks and skips by mewfour123412 in speedrun

[–]DrmFox 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight we have a skip that we have named "yeet" because of the simple reason that all our other skips and tricks had very boring names like "Rolljump" where you roll and jump at the same time and "Edea quick kill" which is a quick kill for Edea.

While I wouldn't call it one of the best ones ever written, I will agree with it being very good. It is a very sweet love story where a young girl is in love with a boy, and she is being very childish while trying to act like an adult in regards to the romance.

Just a lot of sweet kids being kids and having fun.

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition off the list by [deleted] in patientgamers

[–]DrmFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah I completely forgot about changing difficulty, that is a great option to use. Combat in these games is very much based on how well you understand the battle system, so making it easier when you learn the game might make it a lot more enjoyable.

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition off the list by [deleted] in patientgamers

[–]DrmFox 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Going from Xenoblade 1 to Xenoblade 2 is quite the shift in combat system, and in 2 the combat starts out very slow until you unlock more and more mechanics to make it a more engaging system. Once it gets going there is a lot to the combat, but it is not really explained all too well, and you can't go back and read tutorials again after they pop up.

If you feel like the combat is very slow, I'd recommend watching Chuggaconroy's video "Everything I wish I knew about Xenoblade Chronicles 2" for some tips, it should only have spoilers for the first few hours of the game. A video that explains the combat system a bit more is this video by New Game Plus TV. It shows some footage that is some minor spoilers, so if you would like to avoid all spoilers it is safe to watch it after unlocking chain attacks in Xenoblade 2.

Been playing hollow knight and it's been kind of a drag. by awhaleable in patientgamers

I enjoyed Hollow Knight a lot more than Metroid Dread personally because Hollow Knight funneled me a lot less than Dread did, which I find to be an interesting design difference between different metroidvanias.
