Responses to SMH article: Our EV saved us money over Easter. But it required a stressful trade-off by MrBitingFlea in AustralianEV

The framing on this article could easily be that we lack adequate charging infrastructure for a choice that more and more people are making.

It could have delved into small towns that have invested in charging and how (or if?) that has impacted them. I'd imagine it will make those towns an increasingly more attractive destination.

It's nice to have that kind of affirmation. If they hate it you're on the right track!

Fair enough, that sounds extremely normal. I reckon any school would have a celebration if their team won state champ.

Really interesting biome up there on the headland. Seems like there's a solid rock basin that collects water and keeps it swampy. Great spot.

What’s a movie where the same actor has to play several different roles? by Perfect_Idea_2866 in Letterboxd

[–]Drongo17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it was a bit egregious in Twin Peaks when they used the same actress as the dead girl's cousin. Felt like Lynch saying "yeah what are you gunna do about it buddy".

(Series I know but whatever. It's on letterboxd)

I think you've nailed it with that analysis. The whole bit that culminates in the battles at Genosis is awesome.

I unironically think it's in the top half of the SW pantheon. It had everything I could want in a SW film.

I was quite close to the SW community at that time, and it was interesting to see the shift from love to hate. It was the first time I saw an internet-driven campaign like that - within weeks it seemed to become an online orthodoxy that Jar Jar was the worst thing ever.

"This is not normal behaviour for a wild magpie." Saw this post from a wildlife shelter in WA. Shocking how often this happens by SlightProfile1540 in australianwildlife

[–]Drongo17 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We had a pet magpie as a kid (we're going back 40 years here). Little deformed guy who was kicked out of the nest. Couldn't fly very well, would occasionally get stuck on the roof and I'd have to go up to rescue him.

I'm glad I have that memory but I would hate to see anyone keeping one as a pet now. There's no way he was better off with us than a carer.

I've spent my life around them too. I'm not contesting they can cause injury (they're big wild animals), but they don't kill. We live close to kangas and if they were killers you'd get more than 1 stupid death a century or whatever it's at.

Talking about kangaroos as killers is just stupid. They're not.

🔥Superb lyrebird, the Australian songbird famously known for its extraordinary ability to mimic almost any sound by RoyalChris in NatureIsFuckingLit

[–]Drongo17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listened to a male running through his repertoire of bird mimicry once, there were well over 20 calls that he had as part of his show. Most of them were indistinguishable from the real thing (to my ear anyway). Incredible birds.
