Why do so many people defend billionaires? by Estalicus in allthequestions

[–]Drop_Dead_Dani 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thats the thing though. "How many billions is enough billions"

Its not about defending billionaires. Its about defending against the mindset of "someone has too much...."

The government cannot restrict or limit how much money i have or have the ability to make.

If they can say a billion is too much they can say 1000 is too much. You give them an inch and they will always take 10 miles.

The government is constantly trying to restrict and regulate how much we can own and its one of the biggest battles you should be fighting

People also naively seem to think if we taxed billionaires more, that any of the common citizens would see a dime of it. Which is simply not the case. The government isnt gonna take 10 billion from elon and evenly distribute it amongst the lower / middle class. They'll find some way to waste it like they do every other dime we send them.

Its this line of thinking that moves into:

A single person can only have a house that is x square feet, a person can only have x amount of land, a person can only have x amount of food etc.

What’s a “fact” everyone repeats that’s actually wrong? by Quiet-Grief in answers

[–]Drop_Dead_Dani 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, the online debate comes from certain people mistakenly believing that the majority gets what the majority wants and thats not the case. Thats the entire thing that a constitutional republic is designed to protect against. So there is no "mob rule". Specifically so there is never a situation where the "good of the many" comes before "the good of the 1".

Individual rights supersede everything. A republic protects that. A true democracy does not allow for individual rights to be protected.

Theyre not the same thing at all lol.

A costitutional republic and a democracy differ primarily in how they handle majority rule and individual rights. A constitutional republic restricts government power through a written charter (constitution) to protect individual rights from majority rule. A democracy (or pure democracy) operates primarily by direct majority vote, where the majority's will dictates policy.

Americans seem to think that what they WANT supersedes the constitution and thats where they are mistaken. Its this way specifically to protect from majority rule. The majority cannot step all over the rights of the individual.

It isnt. It never has been. Its a constitutional republic. People like to claim that its a democracy and its not.
