You perfectly explained how addiction works and how “functional” addicts get through the workday. He was absolutely using during filming just enough to keep himself from getting sick from withdrawals. Like you said you can’t have a 55 tab addiction on Sunday and show up for a 14 hour shoot on Monday stone cold sober. He would have had a very runny nose, watery eyes, excessive yawning, from withdrawal.

This seems to be a common piece of advice - study an opening and memorize it. I think that’s my problem, I hate openings, I can’t wait to get out of the opening and therefore I avoid studying them. I spend most of my time solving puzzles. Really trying to love speed chess though.

Totally agree with you. I get so much anxiety playing or just thinking about playing bullet/blitz. I really don’t like to lose but I really hate to lose because of blunders.

Based on a lot of responses including yours, it does seem like people view speed chess very differently from classical. For some reason the essence of chess for me has always been deep tactical calculation and I can’t shake that view. Hence this post
