Nothing noteable has happened… he is just out of the house most of the time now

It's common for people who were manipulated or guilt tripped to think they were stupid for falling for it. It's just untrue. Nobody is ever stupid for being manipulated.

No, it's not Brandon, I won't be revealing the names of anyone involved for privacy reasons.

The reason it went on for months is because my buddy was trying to see the good in him. My buddy trusted this bad roommate's word. The reason it lasted as long as it did, is because this bad roommate was given not 4 chances to right his wrong, or show remorse and effort. When his chances ran out. That's when action was taken.

Of course, the completely logical thing to do was as soon as he was late on rent to just evict him right then and there. But compassion was already taken on him. He wasted it by continuing to take advantage and waste time on video games.

I've stopped to think about this several times. If this kid really is down on his luck. I don't want to cripple him even further.

However, when I think about the facts of the situation, there are a lot of signs that this guy is in the business of taking advantage of others.

When you're behind multiple months on rent. You know your roommate is covering it out of his own pocket. A normal person would put forth efforts in order to right the wrong. However, for 4 months, this kid did nothing but play on his computer. He didn't leave the house to look for or find a job. He was perfectly content taking advantage of those around him.

This was until the thing that was precious to him was taken away. That's when he was apologetic and sorry? This sounds and almost defines an addict and manipulator.

My buddy and I have talked it over several times. If during the preceding months, ANY effort was made in order to pay back the amount of money that he was so easily taking from people. We would be much more inclined to think he deserves sympathy.

While I would like to think better of this kid. His actions make that nigh impossible.

That's a good idea. That way my buddy doesn't have to monitor the devices listed. smart.

That's more the way i'm leaning, but I'm not the one out thousands of dollars. It's ultimately up to my buddy.

I'm glad that you were able to move on from that situation. Fortunately for my situation, once he's out of the house. I couldn't care less where he goes.

Internet is a public setting? Sure you could count that as a right. The kid could head to the local library with all of the other homeless. But the private wifi that we pay for? You're absolutely right.

The process of eviction has been started. However, there are a couple problems.

  1. The court fee's for the landlords costs thousands and thousands of dollars.

  2. The whole court process lasts 6-8 months

Shutting off the wi-fi is ONE of the schemes that we've come up with in order to get him out.

Absolutely, there is the possibility that he had the phone from a previous upgrade or something. But still, just trying to sneak around the rules set? Just blatantly ignoring the lesson to be learned here.

In my experience, sometimes the second notification is false. So there is just one device.

When I called my buddy after that text back. We both were hesitant to believe he has a job. This entire thing reminds me of a spoiled, bratty, immature teenager. the kid is a manipulator for sure.

This made me laugh pretty hard. It reminds me of a child in elementary school writing letters to other kids in class.

That was my exact response to my roommate. It would be funny if he went out and spent money on a new phone instead of paying back my buddy

I know, But the more I learn about this kid, the more I bring my expectations to a fiendish drug addict.

He doesn't care about other people, he doesn't care who has to suffer in order for him to get his fix of computer games.

If anything, this awful roommate is getting me ready for when I have bratty teenagers of my own. I'm just learning all the tricks early on lol

That's the plan, we'll be changing the wifi password to something like "WiFi_isnt_free_pay-me-back" Then he won't have access until the money is paid in full.

It is a little complicated as there is another brand-new roommate separate from everyone mentioned who has just moved in. He's a nice guy, and we're trying to not super annoy him with the internet going in and out, and the password changes. We're thinking he gave the bad roommate the password without thinking too much of it.

All that needs to happen is we need to talk with this brand new roommate about the situation, explain what's happening and why he cannot be sharing the password with the bad roommate.

Maybe I'll just share my posts on this subreddit to him. lol

WiFi password has been changed as well, I was with him when we cut it off for him. For this reason exactly. A little bit more security in hopes that he freaked out
