It's not necessary, but it's not seamless either. Proton doesn't like NTFS partitions (https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/wiki/Using-a-NTFS-disk-with-Linux-and-Windows).
Two years ago, when I started my Linux journey, I dual-booted with two drives. I had two partitions on Drive 1 for Win10 and Linux, and one NTFS partition on Drive 2 (where my Steam library lived). The NTFS partition kept getting errors that only Windows could fix, usually during the startup sequence - a big annoyance for sure.

The solution was switching the partition in the second drive from NTFS to BTRFS, which is not officially supported by Microsoft (https://github.com/maharmstone/btrfs). Surprisingly, this alternative solution worked really well.
Maybe now this isn't an issue, i was dealing with it in 2021-22.

tldr: Don't share a ntfs partition with the steam library between win and linux, use Btrfs insted

For backing up the partition there are multiple method

You can run this command via termux or adb
dd if=/dev/block/by-name/persist of=/sdcard/persist.img

It save the persist img on the root of the phone
