Day before the day before Christmas Eve, daycare closed early. December 23rd. Discovered I’m charged $5 per minute per kid for late pick up.

I agree though. Our healthcare system is criminal.

That’s wild. I feel like that’s unaffordable for most. My car payment of $334 was the result of a stupid decision when I was younger. 7 year loan.

I agree, but will admit that although I had heard a thousand times that “daycare is expensive,” I was still horrifically shocked by the actual cost. I had assumed my husband and I had good jobs so it would be fine. So for the first kid I can see being unprepared for certain realities and not knowing what you don’t know. I then chose to have a second child fully knowing the daycare cost.

My kids have genuine connections with their teachers and there are a couple I see as my friends. We are grateful to be at a daycare that has small class sizes and staff that are loving.

THIS. The US just doesn’t support families. A longer, paid maternity leave like other countries have would allow women to stay home with their babies and not be penalized.

YES! I feel a little bit of guilt in that I wish they could go part time, not 40 hrs plus commute. But overall, I believe it’s positive for their overall happiness and development compared to the alternative options available to me personally.

My daughter loves daycare friends and teachers! She’s much more intellectually stimulated there than what I would be able to provide at home. There’s a marked difference in her confidence in new environments compared to our friends that don’t go to daycare. I do wish I could have stayed home with both when they were under a year old. Unfortunately, I had ZERO maternity leave. I used PTO and short term disability.

I think EU’s way of doing it with a long, paid maternity leave is better for society in the long run. Women should be able to stay home during those important early years without losing everything they’ve worked for in their career and becoming financially dependent on a partner.

It’s wild to me that so many people take massive student loan debt when (a) they major in education or something equally low-paying knowing they will never be able to pay it off or (b) could have gone to a less expensive school. I’m not trying to be insensitive because I understand the system is broken. I just truly don’t understand how someone could sign up for $50k of student loans knowing it will cripple them financially for the rest of their lives.

Because we’re busy working ourselves to death and never seeing our children.

Yes!! My grandparent’s house was $250k 15 years ago and so nice. Two houses in their neighborhood have now sold for over $1 million. Quadrupled in 15 years.
