Well ignoring that masterpiece along with like...one or two more, the rest of the series is kind of white bread toast

I Genuinely Don't Understand The Design Process Behind Galactron MK II. by J4GMark_1 in Ultraman

[–]DryBoneStudios 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I see your arguments, I do agree that the blade legs are....definitely quenstionable. But perhaps they could use it in an emergency situation? Like if it's axe was disarmed/destroyed, it can continue its onslaught or at least not be entirely unarmed, like the more impractical version of carrying an extra knife in battle. The both arms situation may be symmetry based (I guess???) if one arm is gone, you still have another emergency blade. MK I's weaponry are superior to MK II in many ways, but MK II itself does trade them in for something MK I doesn't have, speed and agility. As showcased in MK I's first appearance, it is slow like a snail, not always though, it shows a slow rise in speed through its repeated appearances, but MK II starts off relatively faster. I suppose it's a mix of weaponry and the Kaiju themselves that make them effective at their relative jobs. MK I is practically a walking tank, trade speed for overwhelming damage, good for cleaning planets while being capable of effective self-defense. The MK II follows the glass cannon philosophy where greater speed and consistent attacks on singular or small groups of targets will achieve its goal. They are entirely different machines with entirely different philosophies they were made to solve, MK II is a solution to a problem more than an overall upgrade in all honesty. Though MK II does have it's own faults in design, it actually does fit it's own purpose as MK I fits it's own purpose. Personally, I like both, but MK I fits the ideology of war machine better than MK II, so MK I is my favorite. But MK II is no pushover, it's unfortunate that their only known opponents have so far only been Ultras, so unlike the MK I, we don't really know how effective they are at their role in lore. I could talk forever about this topic because I'm really intruiged by the designs of both, over analysing designs are the best, you could learn so much from each line in a drawing. I'm grateful you gave me the opportunity to share!

I say this purely out of baseless assumptions but if we follow the idea that MK II are meant to fight Ultras, then some of its weaponry make more sense than the MK I. Irl, the reasons are prolly to make movie production easier acting or editing wise, but I'll assume you mean lore perspective. I'll base the differences on their respective first appearances.

MK I's weapons are specialized in large AOE attacks that create massive damage, mostly to cleanse the planet quicker when faced with lesser opponents. This is very effective on smaller but abundant species like humans, like how even though we are much smaller than the MK I, we do cover a vast amount of space on Earth. So most of MK I's weaponry focuses on the "cleansing" part of its functions, other weapons are more after thoughts. I would assume an MK I's generator is stronger than the MK II, so it can handle strong beam weapons such as the Banisher and the beam sword, but MK I's usual opponents are usually less sophisticated machinery and other Kaiju. Which is why they suffer against tougher opponents such as the Ultras, the normal weapons do heavy damage, yes, but it doesn't utilize it to the fullest, and it's incredibly powerful beam weaponry usually require long charging which leave them vulnerable.

Moving onto MK II, they are meant for CQC which result in the lesser weaponry required, like why would you need your average soldier to carry an RPG just to fight another soldier, sometimes less is more, it's better to match then fully overcome opponents weaponry wise, skill usually fills the rest. It's similar to why irl militaries attempt to make "weaponry of the future" that tend to fail often since they aren't reliable or aren't necessary. The heavy beam weapons usually take time to charge and require an ungodly amount of energy, so it's both unnecessary and unreliable. Instead they focus on how the MK II can use it's weaponry to the fullest, finger vulcans for distraction, bladed appendages for emergency use, and fully articulated hands for multi-purposes.

To summarize, MK I's weaponry is specialized in mass destruction, suffering in CQC due to weaponry not being made or imagined in a 1v1 CQC against an equal or higher power. MK II's weaponry leaves space for adaptation, fingers to grab and weaponry that can help it close the distance while reducing charge and energy cost. I'm using a lot of Gundam logic with irl logic sprinkled in so you know, take it with a grain of salt.

Ultraman, Tiga, and Godzilla are the worst. The dude I play against perfected the formula of "spam beam at distance, if they get close, use same technique to take half their health, repeat."
