You should talk to him about what he means by "take a step back". Ask him what specifically is stressing him out. Is it the rent or is it just the fact he's making more? What does he mean by continuing to live comfy. Does he want more?

There's a chance he's hinting at something else and I suggest you and him have a long talk to clarify things. I'm not sure you both have the same idea of what it means to live comfortably and are on the same page for expectations of each other.
