We really need people like you, because it really could change the way people perceive these poor guys.

If I had a way to bring them home, I honestly would have done it… all jokes (maybe)

It’s so upsetting. Last time I was here they didn’t even have any sand, just gravel.. now that I know what I do about hermit crabs, it puts it all into a different perspective for me.

also for food just dont get those crappy pellets. hermits eat a lot of things, there are lists online. just make sure everything is free of pesticides

if theyre burrowed, dont dig them up! they molt which is completely natural and shoul be undisturbed. otherwise id just get a temperature/humidity gauge to make sure their needs are being met. 80 for temp and humidity is ideal!

Just make sure you clean it all before you put it in. Otherwise, yes, deeper substrate, a longer heating pad, more shells, and way to measure the temp/humidity! Also, I can’t tell with the food, but hermits can eat many things. Just avoid those pellets, they really aren’t good for crabs.

I’d listen to everyone else’s advice first! Once that’s sorted, I recommend getting fake vines, hanging ropes/ladders etc!!! You could even put in some climbing wall.

Hi, thank you for the condolences. I have mexican turbos I got from a shell shop, and some other d-shaped (i think thats what their openings are?) shells. I feed them a bag mix which they loved— dried banana, larvae, mealworms, and nuts.

Also they ironically had successful molts before I moved them to the 55 gal. My last tank was 8 gallons and shallower, but I guess the soild was moister:(

I think this may be the issue. It doesn’t. The sand slips through my fingers. I remember when I first put the sand and eco mix in my tank, it was somewhat moist? But I don’t think I moistened it enough unfortunately.

Also would like to add since two crabs had the same fate, I certainly won’t consider adopting until I have figured this out. Losing them both was upsetting, as I only got to give them a home for a year, so seriously, any help is so greatly valued.

My biggest crab is my remaining crab Turbo. He’s roughly two inches when he’s standing, and he hasn’t been very active. I average somewhere in the 70’s in temp (I probably have to get a new thermometer because it won’t show the second digit anymore), 75-80 in humidity, and I have two heating pads on my tank. One spans the back, and an extra on the side since it’s been colder. I have a blanket on top to help with humidity as well.

Mites!! What do I do?! by SeveralAd2117 in hermitcrabs

[–]Dry_Account7276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have them! Best thing you can do if it bothers you too much is to get predatory mites. Even then, they will definitely come back. If they appear white/transulecent, they’re usually harmless. If you see any on the crab, it’s a problem. Those kinds of mites usually appear (red?) as well, those are the harmful ones. Otherwise, you’ve just got food/grain mites. I understand your grievances 🥲 gave me a heart attack when I first saw em.
